Firearms onboard

captd-

You were the one with the flying helm (seat only) on the CD-22, right?

Did you ever give us a full report on how it worked out?

I know there were some concerns about the weight placement, etc.

Nice to hear from you again!

Joe

Hi Guys,

I chimed in on page one with one of the first posts and have been in FL for about ten days, stopped by my in-laws in SC on the way home, checked the site and am amazed at how this has progressed.

As an avid (maybe rabid) shooter I have taken LFI 1, 2,3 and Advanced Handgun, Tactical Defense Institute 1-5 and Tac Rifle and also a number of courses at Midwest Training Group (IL), including ones taught by Farnham, Hackathorn and Cirillo. In FL I just completed two days at Universal Shooting Academy with a top instructor ( almost 3000 rounds in two days), mostly on steel.

In the past I have been reluctant to chime in too deeply on guns, not knowing the crowd on this site. I am impressed.

On 9mm vs 40 vs 45. ALL of the above instructors have stated in classes that with modern hollowpoint high performance bullets, pushed at +p or +p+ velocities, show negligible performance differences in self defense encounters, based on EMPIRICAL evidence.

Interestingly, the USA class in FL this week was taught by a steel champ, world class shooter, etc. Practical side, he has spent much of the last two years working in Iraq as a been-there done-that kind of guy. He's heading back in about a month. He told us that everyone in the company that employs him carries a Glock 19 with HP ammo. All of them have SF credentials.

My carry gun is a Glock 19 loaded with CorBon 124 gr +p hp's.

416 Rigby, I'm with you on the 45/70. I used one as my heavy gun in Africa last July, loaded with Garrett heavy loads, and my PH was so impressed with it that he had to shoot it himself. He didn't hang on enough though, and wound up with a "Weatherby eyebrow"! The gun is a modified Guide Gun, an early one modified by Jim Brockman from Gooding, ID.

valkyrie,

WOW! As an instructor, he is at or near the top of the heap. I am envious of your experience with him.

Captd,

I am a firm believer in strong gun control. My definition of strong gun control, of course, is hitting what you are aiming at. I value my rights under the second amendment. Because of that, I am also a life member of the NRA.

I know of folks here who are not so comfortable with them. However, given that the discussion has mostly been one of technical and practical decisions regarding firearms, with far less discussion of the political/social side of things, we've avoided the usual heated discussions that this subject can bring about. Another testament to the fine folks here, me thinks...

Heh...the mention I made earlier of short loads, that failed to cycle my Glock 23 - Cor-Bons. Had a box with about 50% short rounds. You can read about it here - a gunsmith buddy of mine wrote up the details after he analyzed the rounds.

As you're probably aware, they have a great reputation. Cor-Bon suggested there was a disgruntled ex-employee involved, but still...it scared me off of them for good - particularly given the price.

For a nice stiff load in my 9mm's, I've still got a few boxes of 1990's Hirtenberger +P+'s, which I've heard is getting tough to find. Great ammo, but man...you know it when they let loose compared to normal +P's.

Geeze, Dan, I couldn't have said it better myself. It's hard to believe that some people actually idolize idiots like him and his eco-whacko thinking.
Hey, ever think of running for office? You're so well spoken on touchy-feely issues like this. :D

Sounds like Timothy Treadwell had bad karma.

Alaska and Mother Nature have a way of putting such malfeasance to the test.

Arnold's "Califfefornia" has enough enough bad karma leading it astray down the Bleeding Heart Path just for now. Thank you, Hollywood, The Boulevard of Overpaid Stars, who profess their uncooked and untested political popcorn to their own unwarry worshiping fans and anyone else who will listen. The media just love it because they have much the same view and the ratings are great!

Would you like us to send you any of them for a little Alaskan "Trial By Fire" karma testing?

Would make a great "Survivor" series for TV: Hollywood Stars vs. the Brown Bears:

Your farorite Hollywood stars, all butt-naked, on Kodiak Island duing the winter. Also featuring the native food chain in action. Thrilling chase scenes galore. Who will be "eliminated" first? (Las Vegas could set odds and line up the bets.)

Move over Super Bowl, you won't be the #1 sporting even in the world for long.

(I promise to swear off 2 am coffee soon, honestly.)

Joe.

Susan and I watched "Grizzly man" last night and Timmy was everything I was lead to believe. A fraudulent, crazy, self-centered, evro-wack, whose damm funny to watch. And to tell you the truth it was a great waste of talent. The filming of the bears that he did was just incredible. Some one could take the film that he shoot and turn it into a great nature film about bears, just edit out Timmy boy. Some of the still pic’s, that they showed very little of, were some of the best nature photo's I have ever seen.

Timmy boy had talent, just no grasp of reality. When he was filming the evil guides and their picture taking criminal clients, we knew that Timmy was gone. He was berating them for taking pictures of bears, just like he was, yet after all his talk about "protecting the bears" he did it from hiding. The film, which was a fair and neutral documentary, lead you to believe that Timmy was going to schools "at no charge" I know this to be false. He did not charge or get paid directly, but the schools gave money to his "Grizzly people" organization. Which I just learned was not a non-profit.

I am worried about the next Timmy, that small kid who say Timmy at school, on our tax dollar, and was miss lead into the idea that bears are just misunderstood beings with feelings, emotions and more though then "Where lunch”. Because that kid is going to get killed and it will be Timmy and the schools faults. People living in alternate reality’s, like Timmy and Michele Jackson, should not be allowed around children.

I do not want to see the poaching of bears that is happening all along the west coast. At the end of the show they show that six bears that lived in the area where Timmy filmed where later shot. When you have bears that are use to seeing a man around, and that man not being a danger, it allows the poacher’s to just walk up and kill it. Timmy may not have pulled the trigger but those bears are dead because of him.

Your right the show made it look like those bears were shot very near where his camp was. A few years ago, maybe 10, there was a big up swing in poaching black bears in wa. or and ca. The russians were shooting them for the gail bladders and selling them to the chinas and japanese. They think everything will heal them. Something like 120 black bears were killed in 6mns out of season. No season in ca. So I am sure it happens and I don't like it. I do not think timmy was helping at all by making these animals unafraid of humans.

Well, I had to sell three others to fund my new carry gun, but the folks at the Kimber Custom Shop have come through again. Just arrived yesterday. Ain't she a beauty? It's the Compact CDP (Custom Defense Package) Everything a match grade .45 Auto should be...and only 28oz! Officer's grip frame and 4" barrel. Hardly even notice you're packing it.

Now that's perty! BTW, Steve asked a State Marine Board person at the sportsman show in Portland about carrying onboard -- he said it's the same as your house...same rules apply. He did say any officials boarding your boat will appreciate you telling them it's onboard tho!

Steve says beautiful handgun. It's a little easier to conceal than my 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk 44 mag with 4x Leupold!

Oh! Show and tell time? Only 4oz heavier than the CDP Compact. .45AC, of course.

Sweet lookin' heaters!

I've got two Kimber Compacts -- one steel-framed and one aluminum-framed. I usually carry the AL-frame (big surprise). I had a Kimber Compact Royal Carry as well, but figured 3 Kimber Compacts was a bit much, even for me.

Chuck:

Who did the bobtail for you? Jardine?

That was pretty funny! Hey, the co-pilot was carrying a gun just like mine in the pic! A man of good taste!

Hey, I see you're in New Brockton, AL...we're headed down your way in June...moving to Montgomery for the next four years. We'll need some AL fishing advice! We just bought a boat same year as yours...even the same motor...(freaky!) and will be picking it up on the way. She's green so at least we won't be seeing double.
