Ferry vs. Breakwater (cape cod)

The article said they were making temporary repairs on scene, and would travel under it's own power for repair. It also said there was a breach in the hull. I's say somebody got real lucky that night.

I have a hard time understanding how this happened. i am not a sea captain but with ais, radar, gps and window to look out how does this happen with two captains with 50 years experience? If you don't know your location stop. Its a great plan of attack. I learn this long ago. Does not matter if its boats cars or hiking, ( no so good in planes) if you are not sure of you location STOP and figure it out. The USS Fitzgerald has me stumped. Short of a ship wide electrical failure and not sure how that happened. Need more facts.

I would think that even if the cargo ship went after them, a Destroyer would
have been able to out maneuver it. :crook

Ok they maybe wrong but how in the hell did they get in that situation to began with.? You got every electronic device known to man and a well trained crew of 10 plus people on the bridge. How in the hell did a container ship even get close enough to hit them? Even if the ship was adrift you have spot lights and flares to warn them. I am just shocked this happened.
 
As I noted in another thread, A retired Navy Captain, who commanded several of the navy ships--told me that AIS is not used on the Navy Ships--at least not transmitted....

I agree, difficult to understand, unless merchant ship was passing the Navy ship.
