EXCEL 2000W Power Generator

Does anyone have any experience with or knowledge of the EXCEL 2000W Compact Portable 110V/120V AC/DC Inverter Gasoline Gas Power Generator.

It seems that it is a bit bigger and heavier than the Honda Eu2000i generator that a lot of people use. However, it has a higher continuous power output.

The usual list price is about US$999. It can be found for US$699, but right now it can be found for US$389 at Newegg.

There does not seem to be any reviews of this generator online (that I found). The $389 price seems like this would be a good deal.

No experience with this, but over 30 years with Honda. There is a reason that Honda remains the best selling unit. It works! Our local RV dealer is not a Honda dealer, and over the last few years has had at least 6 different brands of this type of generator--each time, I ask what happened to the old brand? Couldn't get parts or service etc. How about the new one--its going to be great...6 months later, a different brand is in the window.

This unit is heavier (electric start and battery)-This is a 2 to 3 hp engine--anyone can hand start it. This weighs more (battery etc) by 13 lbs. It requires priming the engine??? why. Hondas use a choke--not sure if the prime is replacing this or not. I would guess it is noisier? Is it made in China or India?

I have stuck with Honda and never been disappointed. Yes this is much cheaper, may be slightly more power (I would really want to see actual tests for that.

And we've got Bob Austin's "old" Honda genset. Not sure how old, certainly not as old as he or I but it always starts the first time, everytime!

Unlike me...

Now, Dr. Bob probably still does. I haven't for quite sometime now!!

I'll tell newegg, keep the eggs, I'm sticking with what I know will work when I need it...(talking about the genset now!) :xlol

Hondas are always great whether its an outboard or a lawnmower, but this unit is 1/3 the price! I'm curious to hear if anyone has tried it out and if it is reliable.

The price is attractive and the electric start is something novel that might be handy on a RV or trailer park. If you are using this on a boat, I think the added weight(battery, starter) would negate the benefits of a remote start. Most Honda's I have had or seen start on the first pull anyway. Even the 10 hp Honda is easy to pull.

As for noise, a friend of mine has a 6500 Honda gen at his cottage. When the power goes out he says he can't even hear his gen over the noise of his neighbors! This Excel does have a campground rating though, so it must be relatively quiet.

Also as Bob pointed out "ratings" do not always come from the same bible. Will this unit put out full power(without overheating) sitting in the sun on the back of a boat?

I am perhaps a bit biased, I have worked on Honda's (auto) since 1988. One other thing I will point out from my experience, Honda fasteners are of better quality and do not rust as bad as those of most other manufacturers. This might be another plus for a gen sitting on the back of a boat.

Regards, Rob

OK, another Chinese clone of the Honda/Yamaha inverter generators. And here's another: Chinese generators, just as cost effective (cheap.) And if you want really cheap: Harbour Freight Gen for $180. And I'll bet you can get an extended warranty.

My brother loves them, buys them for his ranch and goes and gets another on a regular basis.

I'm more than convinced that you get what you pay for. One of the 2 Japanese models (Honda/Yamaha) offers dependability as well as electricity. When I'm anchored at Santa Cruz Island or up in Desolation Sound and I need power, I'll pay the relatively small difference in price for something that'll start and run.

So I have a Honda 1000i. And it's 10 years old. It's not perfect, doesn't generates 1000 watts for example. But in the last decade, it's always started. And the small difference in price ($300) has more than been amortized.

Just change the oil frequently.

Your choice as to generators, but over the decade, the cost will be the same.

Hey Boris-

You're absolutely right, and additionally,

l.) it might well be cheaper to buy the better product initially rather than a string of failures, and

2.) it would certainly be cheaper to buy the better product initially rather than buy the cheap one first, then buy the better one, once you've learned your lesson!

Education/learning can be expensive!

Just wait for someone to buy one and use it for about 5 years to find out. What will you use in the meantime? Reliability is measured over time, not the first few times it starts and runs!! :thup

Charlie is correct--most of the reviews you read on these generators are after they first get them. Go to the RV forums--there are hundreds or threads on problems with the off brands.

I have a 500 watt Honda four stroke which I purchased sometime in the 1970's. It still runs well. I have used it for battery charging and lights mostly, but it ran a neighbor's refer during hurricane Ivan.

I looked them up. they are a Indian company and looks like a smaller version of Tata, At least you will know a head of time you will be talking to India for support. Here is their link.

Many many times when you call for support you are talking to India, the Philippines, Malaya, etc. . I find it unusual to find a company that has support in the USA. Except perhaps LL Bean... the only thing harder to understand are the instructions on how to assemble a Ubrufactfarctn from IKEA!

However, there's the bumper sticker I saw yesterday that said....

SAVE THE TATAS wonder what that meant?

I did not see a db rating.

Try knocking your brains out for awhile and you will get an idea of what these cheap generators will do.

How about some noise and vibration in that nice quite cove.

Sorry for the sarcasm but I have listened to other people with these pieces of engineering malfeasance and no thanks.

I have a Honda generator that I have not used in more than 4 years and I would like to keep it that way.
