Erie Canal

As a local, I can confirm that there is not much traffic on the Canal. In September, my wife and I spent an entire day on the Canal and never saw another boat!

Just one more bit of info on my favorite cruising area.

We have used Seneca State Park as a starting point many times.They have a decent ramp and good long term parking for your rig. The marina there is nice and a good place to stay if you get in late and the price is reasonable. We have left our rig there for as long as 5 weeks. Never any trouble.

Seneca State Park is where we left our truck and trailer... for 6 weeks while cruising the canal and down the Hudson to NYC. IIRC, we spent a couple nights in the marina when we first got there and they didn't charge anything additional for the extended parking time with the truck and trailer. No issue with leaving it there, and they took my phone number, just in case. Nice folks at the park office and in the marina. It was a good place to get provisioned, even though groceries and supplies are readily available all along the canal.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I have a couple of stories to share;

-When digging the canal, a particular boss would give his crew incentive by placing a barrel of whiskey at their goal for the day, which they could have whenever they reached it.

-Kids would line up bottles on the bank and the bored men on the coal barges would throw coal to try and break them. The kids would collect up the coal for ma and dad.
