There is a lot of difference between these vessels and the recreational sailor, who is moving at 5 to 8 knots, vs 25 knots, in full storm force conditions. In any recreational vessel the chance of recovery would have been far better.
We don't know for sure if he had an AIS START type of device--We don't know if he went down immediately and never surfaced. Too many unknowns, until the full story of what happened comes about.
Unfortunately in the 48 degree F water his survival time is less than 3 hours--search was done for 5 hours. His time to unconsciousness, even as a fit athlete was less than one hour.
The boats are under constant satellite telemetry at Volvo race headquarters some will be some eventual exact story of what happened. The boats also have full time high def video recorders, and each carry a DJI drone--which can be and have been launched in conditions similar to this.
Unfortunately these around the World races are no strangers to death at sea. There has a been a death of a Chinese fisherman when the fishing boat was run down by one of the racers on leg 5. The Clipper 70 footers had two deaths in the last running that race. The next generation of the boats will be 60' foiling monohulls, and even faster than these 65 footers.
