Engine specs for a 25’ Cdory

I’m considering buying a 2007 25’ Cdory that has a Honda BF135AKX made in 2006 on it. I’m curious to hear what you all think of the size of the motor for that size boat. The motor has a little over 1000 hours on it. It sounds like, the two previous owners have been very good about maintenance and there are records to 2010.

I’ll be using in Prince William Sound mostly.

You will be disappointed with the LACK OF POWER with the 135.
There are many times in PWS when the weather will dictate getting to the next safe anchorage in a hurry. If a 200 hp. Suzuki or Yamaha was available on the Kenai when I repowered
(2012) that is what I would have.
I ended up with a Suzi. 175 that I feel is bare minimum for
my needs (have 2100 hrs on the 175 now)

Other C-brats will have longer experience than I. We had a Honda 135 on the 03' 25 we bought last year. We knew we were going to end up redoing Sierra as a boat heavy with cruising gear (we have, almost ready for the Sea of Cortez) so we traded the 135 in on a new 200 lightweight Suzuki that is very efficient with all the new technology and only weighs a few pounds more than the 135 Honda. Our boat was very basic when we bought her with a low price so it worked out. I think if Sierra had stayed the light day boat it was before the 135 might have been OK, but age is a factor if it has been a salt water boat, corrosion can affect a well maintained motor.

If the boat doesn’t have a kicker and tons of fishing/cruising gear it should be fine. I run the 150 Honda with a kicker and tons of stuff Making the 25 cruiser heavy and it gets by. We can’t keep up to other boats but and I would love to use the value of the 150 to trade in on a 200hp but it would mean replacing the dual binnacle etc and I have a trailer to buy first.
 
I have the 150 Honda and it is the same engine as the 135, except the 150 has the variable valve timing, which cuts in at higher RPM. At lower cruising speeds there will be little difference. We run a heavy boat, often with cruising gear and food for a month.

The 130 is the engine (on the same block at the 115) in the older C Dory 25, which are marginal.

Having said all of this--if I were to re-power, I would go with a 200 Yamaha.

With the 150, we will run at 20 knots when heavily loaded, as fuel, water, and food are consumed, we will run at 22knots max speed. WOT will be a couple of knots faster. Even with the 130, which we had on the first 25, we would cruise at 17 knots fully loaded for a month in AK.

As long as you keep the boat fairly light, the 135 will allow you to cruise in the mid 20 knot realm. The 1000 hours depends on how the boat has been run, as well as the maintenance. Many of these engines go to over 2000 hours if well cared for and conservatively run.
 
How much hp you need depends on how fast you need to go. I am fine with the 17-20 kts that Thataway gets with his 150, which as he implies you probably would get the same with the 135.

But if you want to cruise at 30 kts, then go for the 200 hp engine.

So why don't you wait to see how the 135 works for you?

I attached twin Honda 90s to my 26' Venture transom and was pleased.
It came out of the hole like a jack rabbit and reached a top end of mid/hi 30s
depending on the load in calm seas. That's about all the speed this rather
flatish stern hull boat could take w/o becoming squirrely.

A single 200hp may do a tad better on a 25'er; the hull weights differ only around
a couple hundred lbs 25' v 26'.

Besides, a larger engine w/more hp, or more cubic inches w/twins, staying w/in
the Mfg recommendations, works less than the smaller engine (trying to save
fuel?) at usual cruise speeds.

I've never been disappointed going w/more hp vs trying to get by w/less. And,
I like the idea of all those square inches of rotating prop with twin engines
propelling the boat vs less with a single engine.

I can't comment on the Honda 135. But back in 2006 these engines had the hp/weight ratio to work on a 25 and anything larger than 150 in displacement/hp came in 6 cylinder configuration, so they were too heavy. Our '07 25 came with a Suzuki 150, also a 4 cyl. Now both Yamaha & Suzuki have 200 hp engines based on a 4 cyl aluminum block, so the weight/hp issue no longer creates a problem. Those that have powered up to 200 hp have only good things to say about them.
