Emma Mae has both batteries in the stbd locker.

Neither is in a battery box and the charger and battery selector switch is also crammed in there.

Going to relocate one batter to the port side locker. Have ordered battery boxes, # 4 wiring and crimp ends for the new battery cables.

Thinking of installing this:

The 716-SQ-140A-DVSR is an ideal replacement for a battery selector switch. Just remove the selector switch and connect the existing wires to a 716 cluster no extra wires are required for a fully automatic battery management system. To be used in single outboard dual battery bank or single alternator inboard engine dual battery bank.

No more flat start batteries

Electronics protection from harmful engine start spikes

The 716 cluster is for use on charging systems up to 150A

The 716 cluster replaces battery isolator systems

Looking up the DVSR :

Charges engine starting batteries before combining auxiliary bank for charging
Protects start batteries from becoming flattened by House Bank loads
Isolates electronics from harmful electrical surges from starter motors
Simple to install three-wire connection leaves alternator wiring intact
No voltage drop vs diode-based battery isolators
Ignition protected
Multi voltage, auto selects between 12 and 24V DC operation
Digital circuits provide very low power consumption and enhanced performance
Remote status LED output option
Continuous rating: 140
Engages: 13.2 VDC,
Disengages: 12.7 VDC

So, any cautions regarding this proposed setup?

I have zero experience in setting up a two battery system so all comments are welcomed and appreciated.

My 22 has both batteries in the starboard compartment. The PO used the port side as a live well, now it is line storage.

My battery management system is a 1-2-Both switch. KISS.

Haven't found a good enough reason to change it.

The 716 works fine. This is a voltage sensitive relay to isolate the house and engine start batteries when the engine is not charging. It also protects electronics from low voltage and spikes when the engine starts.

I would question putting the battery charger with the batteries. Has the lazarette hatch cover been changed out to the one which does not leak?

I wonder if there will be room for a battery box? I use battery boxes when the batteries need securing and are in the open. Example would be between the fuel tanks of the 22. You do need battery terminal protection (can be done with rubber/plastic caps over terminals). No reason not to split the batteries if you are not using the port lazarette for something else. I put spare oil, hydraulic fluid, funnels etc in there with dry deck for the floor. (Mine had been set up to be used as a bait well also, so it had an overboard drain.).

The 1,2, all, off works very well if one remembers to turn the switches properly. It worked for many years before the VSR came around. But the VSR made things simpler and probably a little better for the electronics.

Not sure which ones I have? Will post photo tomorrow in album and maybe you could let me know if it need different ones.

Both batteries are a tight squeeze and the batteries are not fastened down in any fashion.

Is the good one?
