We are all aware of the seismic hazard in California, but not all know the high risk that exists in other states as well. Western Washington, central Utah, western Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana as well as the mid-continent all have risk.

Those Brats living in these areas, or who travel in them, might want to download a new free Utah publication giving ideas of risk-reduction for folks in seismic areas.

Great publication. I got an education in new earthquake constructions standards when my daughter rebuilt her house in Culver City.

We cannot forget that there are other earthquake zones--such as the New Madrid fault--(bicentenial coming up shortly)--which produced a series of severe quakes the worse of 8.1 magnitude. Not sure what the risk is at that fault currently, but there are quakes in other parts of the US.

Here is copy of email I receive from NOAA to alert to Tsunami risk - this alert comes in very quickly - we use the information on our smartphones at the coastal clinics. You can sign up for the alerts that are nearly every other day. This alert is more for the remote quake that we did not feel that is sending a big wave our way. The android app [Earthquake] mentioned in the other list is for quake location based on your specifications. When the quakes occurred as I recall in Chile, and wave of 1-2 foot was projected for California, it gave me time to call friends who were with small children on the beach in California at that time.

Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 01/13/2011 at 8:27AM PST

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 8:17 AM Pacific Standard Time on January 13, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.3 occurred near the Loyalty Islands . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages for information on the event.

This will be the only statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave was generated.)
