Dwhorshak Reservoir

We spent the past week cruising and camping on Dwhorshak. Unfortunately we forgot the camera, but Bill and El have some nice photos from their previous trip.

We spent each night on one of the destination docks. The destination docks are approximately 36'x36' square with a swimming area inside the dock. All are anchored in at least 200' feet of water. There are only eight houseboats on this 55 mi. plus lake. During a busy week, we were the only overnighters on any of the docks we visited. The docks can get busy during the day with swimmers, water skiers etc. Fishing is generally good for Kokanee, Rainbow, Smallmouth Bass and Crappie.

Everywhere we went was very family friendly. The Clearwater Co. Sheriffs Office patrols the lake with a couple high end jet boats. They do a great job of information and education. A new ID invasive species sticker is required in any ID waters this year, but deputies are only providing a friendly reminder to get one.

The lake is operated by the Corp of Engineers and ID State Parks. There are multiple nice boat launches, campgrounds including RV hook-ups and showers for reasonable fees. The lake also offers (I'm guessing 100 or more) boat access only campsites with no fees. No reservations are accepted or necessary. Each of these have outhouses and are kept spotless. The Clearwater Potlatch Timber Protection Association provides wildland fire protection for the area and has a fire patrol boat often seen on the water. There are no launch, parking or destination dock fees, so it is C-Dory paradise.

If anyone is in the area, give us a call and we can provide more information. We recommend it.

You are living in a grand part of the country! My late uncle, Tom Kiiskila, ran Tom's Flying Service in Orofino for many years. He kept a boat on the reservoir and took us for a short ride back in the mid-80s. It's certainly a beautiful cruising area, as you recommend.
Cheers,
Al

that chunk of water has certainlybeen on our mental list of waters to cruise for a few years now....awsome country fer sure, you folks are fortunate to live in that area

If you're like me, not already familiar with this neck of the woods, you're probably wanting to know a little more about the place in a visual, graphic, and pictoral sense.

Thanks for opening my eyes to this Idaho jewel. Most likely, I am moving to Bend, Oregon, not too far away from Dworshak Resevoir, and when I take Blue Bayou there, I'll contact you first for "local knowledge," beyond what's offered here. All the Best,
Charles on Blue Bayou

Ken,

How big are the kokanee? When I visited our Lewiston office (before retirement), I was always tempted to make a road trip out of it, and take the boaterhome. I love the country over there.

Steve,

We did not fish this trip. I did talk with an older couple who were primarily fishing kokanee to can. They said one fish cut in two filled a pint jar. I did hear the #1 and #2 Smallmouth came out of Dwhorshak in recent years.
