Our rusty trusty Minolta Z6 seems to have bitten the dust - may see if anybody can fix an old digital camera, but not counting on it. So just pushed the "One Click" button on Amazon for a new camera, since Powell is coming up so soon...for a Canon A1100IS for $159...This is a P&S - no manual overrides, but 99.9% of my pix are P&S anyway. So stay tuned, we shall see if this was a wise purchase or not!

How about an Apple iPhone? Sorry Pat couldn't resist.

Just bought a Canon D10 $300 12.1 MP all the manual settings and good to 33 feet of water. Good for shooting in the rain and I can fall overboard with it. Good Reviews. Was looking for something a little more rugged.

I just replace my old Pentax Optio W10 that got "unwaterproof" down in Mexico with a new Pentax Optio W60. (Last years version so close out priced.) 10 megapixls, 5X Optical zoom, waterproof, and uses the same SD cards as my Canon SI5. Great belt camera, and both manual and auto features. Pocket size, good zoom and choice of colors :smiled

Hi Pat,

The A1100 looks to be the upgraded version of the A1000 (12 mg instead of 10 mg); that's what we've been shooting with the past year or so. It is a true "pocket" camera. If you've seen our images here, since we got that camera, I have used it for about 95% of what I shoot. It's small, easy to use, and has a real viewfinder... I don't care for holding a camera out at arm's length to use the screen on the back.

About the only overrides most people use is some exposure compensation. This camera has that, but it's MUCH faster to "fake out the meter" to get great sunset/sunrise shots, or compensate for backlighting.

Enjoy the new camera... and give it a real workout at Lake Powell!

Best wishes,
Jim

The A1100 is 12.1 MP also, although I NEVER have the camera at the highest settings, only a few ever get printed, and never to a really large print size - most of them end up here. The underwater part sounds good, but I was looking for (a) a small camera, (2) that uses AA batteries (I hate rechargeable), (c) that was cheap, and (4) that had good reviews. This one SEEMS to fit the bill, but like I say, you never know until you have lived with it a while.

I think an iPhone is in the cards just as soon as Apple opens it up to Verizon...should be early next year. Believe me, I covet one but we have this dang Verizon "Family Plan" that makes it too expensive to switch before it is up!

Amen to that, Jim. I hate that. Probably because I like to frame on screen and aint none of them out there have industrial strength anti-jitter capability that'll keep up with me. The "Deadliest Catch" skippers were in San Diego a while back and Mary posed with Captain Phil and Larry when we ran into them serendipitously. I used her back focus camera and the shot was crappy. Priceless moment and I blew it. My Fuji S8000 would have had no problem.

AND when you can tether your laptop to it! I switched from the Googlephone (Android) on T-Mobile to the Blackberry Storm on Verizon so I could drop my Verizon mobile broadband card plan and just have one phone for both. The Storm connects to my MacBook via Bluetooth -- tres cool! Bonus:better coverage than T-Mobile.
