I like dealing with Eastern Marine. The only problem is that they charge freight. Some of the same stuff on e-bay and amazon has a higher price but includes shipping.

I got the brake kit cheaper through e-bay, considering the total price. It was a heavy order.

Just check the final cost.

I'd agree. Stuff is heavy and comes from the east coast. I ordered brakes and they were less expensive than anything else I could find.

Check out Fisheries Supply for those near Seattle. They had a page on their website that had special order prices for items that are paid in advance and drop shipped. My trailer axle was 1/2 the cost. I did have to wait a month, but it was a over a hundred dollars less than anywhere else. They even do this with items they don't carry if they deal with the manufacturer on other items.

Well folks, I went to West Marine today to purchase maintenance supplies for one of my sailboats. When I got to the counter to check out, I showed the clerk the Defender prices on the items that I was purchasing. The clerk said that they do not honor price matching for Defender. The clerk even called his boss at home and confirmed that they would not honor Defender price matching.
I re-read the West Marine price match fine print and it does not say that they will not honor any particular store (brick and mortar, or on-line).
When I got home I went right to work to give West Marine my feedback about this. I own 12 boats and I will do whatever I can to avoid West Marine. My 1st issue is that their pricing is higher than anyone else and my second issue is being treated like this, when I spend lots of $$$ each year for boat maintenance and supplies.

That mgr was stupid. Lose a little (profit) or lose a lot (customer).

It used to be the local store manager had the option to price match: Current policy states:
Follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Visit your local West Marine Store or call 1-800-BOATING (262-8464) and let your West Marine Associate know you have an item to price match.
Step 2: Provide the name of the competitor, the item, price and the advertisement, store or online location where you saw the price.
Step 3: We’ll confirm the price of the item & match it!

I would at least call their price match line, and ask why they don't follow the policy. Let them know that you are recording the conversation.

Our West Marine moved from the waterfront, to near our Airport, where it is more of a clothing store--but also convent for the Port Supply Trucks to get on and off the Freeway. I suspect their actual boating business is down, but the clothing sales are up...Even Associate employee prices are no longer a real bargain, nor is Port Supply, unless you run a lot of purchases the account. We tend to use one account--so everyone gets a better discount, rather than individual accounts...

Steve, I would like to hear whether you are able to follow up with this, as Bob suggested, and whether they reverse the rotten decision the store handed you today. When I read the West Marine price-matching policy, a couple of weeks ago, I took it to be unequivocal: we will match any price. That's still the way I read it, in the policy cited above.

Perhaps it would help to send them the link to this thread:

My guess is that stores that are profitable will match the internet prices on items if they are brought to their attention by purchasers. These will be relatively few.

Stores that are not making their profit goals are going to be resistant to lowering their prices on anything. I expect it depends on how autonomous each store manager is and how much grief they get from HQ about not meeting their targets.

To HQ it only matters what the numbers are, not details like the individual interaction with a particular customer. The store manager just wants HQ off his back.

I've seen this in other industries.
