Regarding West Marine deals, specifically the Stereo Radio Dual MXCP46BT. Just in case anyone gets this radio, you might want to be aware of this. (As quoted from a message I just sent to West Marine:)

I just received this order and noticed a discrepancy between the model number ordered and what was shown on the box, and what the actual model number was on the radio. The order model number was MXCP46BT. However, the radio had the model number of MXD136BT labeled on it. I spoke with Dual and learned that the model number of MXCP46BT is a combination model number. That is, it includes the package of radio and speakers. The radio is in fact model MXD136BT. This is important to know in that if one goes to the Dual website to download an installation/operation manual, you must use the radio's model number, as opposed to the package model number! Thanks.

I've mounted my FM receiver on the overhead shelf. The problem with it is that most radios originally designed for cars is that the viewing angle for the LCD display is set to be viewed from straight on or looking down from an angle above the radio (think how most are mounted in a car). When viewed from an angle below the level of the radio most of the displays become difficult or impossible to read. I didn't figure this out until I installed the radio.

Since then I have looked at a lot of radios and have not been able to find one that has a good display when it is mounted higher than my head. Unfortunately, the viewing angle of the display is not a published spec.

There are a couple of "solutions" One is the Fusion line--which is compatible with the Garmin MFD. So if you have Garmin instruments, you can control the radio from them (the specific models).

The other is something like this remote head

This is the first one I found, there used to be a number. At one time I had a Jensen which had 3 remotes. Currently I have a "Dual" in my Caracal, which has a remote head on the dash, LCD read out, of volume, station, and input for i pod or sirius tuner. The radio itself is under the center console.

Here is a JBL, and there are several others in the comparison table, made for 4" "instrument" cluster.

Thanks for the info. However, IMO the Fusion radios are a bit over priced.

I agree that the Fusion stereo is expensive...Also it works with Raymarine, and Navico MFD.

Jensen, Dual, West Marine and Sony make units which can be controlled by a smart phone.

We rarely listen to AM or FM radio, and use Sirius 99% of the time. We have a 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 3/4" Sirius unit mounted on a swivel under the shelf (where our Dual stereo/and 2 vhf radios are installed.) It is easy to see the face of the sirius module. This is also used in the house, and fits into a portable "Boom Box". Most of the time, we hook the Sirius head unit directly to a JawBone self contained amp/speakers, which sit on the top of the electronics shelf. When we are at anchor or idle underway, there is plenty of "volume" from this jaw bone set up.

One news story said, "Access to all national parks will be free in 2017 to mark Canada’s 150th birthday."

Looks like a family pass normally costs $136. The news story says the free pass website was swamped with demand today.

Thanks Brent!
Smartplugs and cords at the best prices of the year with free shipping >$99. The best investment you can make in improving the safety of your shorepower system, which is responsible for 50% of boat fires.
Cynics say, Hey, John, you're just removing a high risk connection from your boat inlet and your insurance company to the power pedestal and the marina insurance company!
Yeah, exactly.
No one else makes a fully-tinned shorepower cord, or with a 7 year warranty.
Highly recommended. Not cheap. (Sigh).
Happy shopping!
John

I still have my 25 foot smartplug cord available if anyone wants to purchase it. It's the real thing. I just don't use it, as 25' is too short most the time for the marina's I frequent. This is the cord:

Would like to get $90 for it. + shipping. (I can bring it to the St. John's gathering if anyone wants to buy it there.) Colby
