Dead Battery?

Dropped our 25 C-Dory that we have an offer pending on in the water, and had no power at the dash. "Darn" I thought- "Dead batteries".

Wrong- wing nuts.

So here's the reminder for everyone.

Do not use wing nuts on batteries. Use regular nuts with lock washers.

In fact, the use of wing nuts can void your Evinrude warranty. A loose connection can create volatge problems and can damage engine electronics on any of the brands.

So while we're all doing the spring thing, and moving into summer, check the batteries for water, and check the posts for proper connections.

BTW- installed the nuts and washers and the boat ran great. Sea trial today with potential buyer, and may wind up with a nice 22 Cruiser on consignment.

Bob,
Are you referring to ambient heat or from and electrical overload????

Also..can you tell me what to look for in my wipers. They worked ok last week, turned off batt. switch for a week and now they do not work after turning elec. back on. This makes an old man nuts......anyone know about this problem??

Jack--not ambient heat. But high loads, have been known to melt the nylox as the cables/terminals heated up. As I am sure you know, Nylox nuts should not be reused in a critical application.

Jack, check all of the connections for corrosion, that's usually the problem with things that sit for a while. Also, there are connections inside the wiper motor enclosures. Hard to get off but that's where some of the park circuits are located. Even if you have voltage present, it may not carry the current if they are corroded.

I had the same experience. I have been stubborn though and now use pliers to twist the wing nuts down snug. They have not come loose since.

Definitely better to use proper nuts with lock washers.
