Daydream's Summer Cruise 2016

DAY 1. Bellingham to Chuckanut Bay. We launched Friday, August 12, from Bellingham about 5:30 p.m., about a week later than we had planned due to trailer issues! So our first night was in Chuckanut Bay, a gorgeous little spot closeby. It has a little beach at the head of the Bay where I take Baxter for his exercise and constitutional! No cell service, hence no internet connection at Chuckanut Bay.

DAY 2. Chuckanut Bay to Tombolo Cove, Decatur Island. Tombolo Cove is just one of the most beautiful anchorages in the San Juans! It is the little cove formed by the tombolo between Decatur and the Nature Preserve just north of Lopez Pass. We dropped our crab pots in Lopez Sound on the way in. No cell service at Tombolo Cove, either!

DAY 3. Tombolo Cove. When the tide was high, we went back out to Lopez Sound to check our crab pots - hit the jackpot (for us anyway), a limit of 10 dungies, with a few really big ones. We decided to stay here another day and dropped our pots again. I whack them in the middle and then pull them apart to go on ice until we can cook them. We are finding we are ice self-sufficient with our ARB freezer. We still have our butane stove, but we are now cooking almost everything on a one burner Coleman in the cockpit. It is amazing to me how much more cooking we get out of a one pound propane cylinder compared to the little butane cylinders. Crab for breakfast, lunch and dinner for awhile!

DAY 4. Tombolo Cove to Blind Island. We pulled our pots on the way out and got 5 more dungies, then slow cruised to Blind Island just off the Shaw Island ferry terminal. There is another C-Dory here, Lucille, with Steve and Judy from Eugene, OR. I rowed over to say hello! They are on their way to the Gulf Islands. This ferry came into the Shaw Island ferry terminal while we were having our sundowners! We have cell service here, so we are catching up on a few days of C-Brats, emails and Facebook!

This afternoon we will head for Matia Cove, then back to Chuckanut Bay for Wednesday night, and Thursday back to Bellingham to get ready for the Bellingham CBGT. Sunday we will be back out cruising for another four days or so. Weather has been spectacular, and we are having a blast!

Sounds like a nice relaxing cruise--and you are making me hungry for crab! Give Baxter an extra treat for Angel, who gives a paw wave!

And Baxter paw waves back!

BTW, we joined the AGLCA this morning, are planning our grand adventure to start in September of this year and go through however long we want to in 2017! So Pensacola will be on our agenda if possible!

DAY 5. Change of plans, we decided to stay here at Blind Island today! We are anchored very close to the Blind Island State Marine Park, so it is a short row to take Baxter in! There have been two groups of campers on the island. Yesterday, a pretty good sized sail / row boat from Four Winds on Orcas, and today a group of kayakers from Camp Orkila, also on Orcas. I was an Orkila camper in the 1950s, and all three of our kids have been Orkila campers! The Blind Island campsites are part of the "marine trail" and can only be used by people accessing the island by human or sail power! Baxter just loves the island, and the kids really love playing with him!

Looks like a great trip so far Pat! So if you row the dinghy from Daydream onto Blind Island, are you allowed to camp in the campsites, since you arrived in a human powered vessel? There are many marine trail islands like that, and I've always wondered, since my 16' is not great for camping aboard and might prefer using a tent, "rowing" to shore of course!

Hmm...good question!. I don't think that is the intended program, but I really don't know!

Crabs look good! Reminds me of cracking crab with you and Patty and the gang in our impromptu meeting at Friday Harbor (2011?) I'm having Thai in Auke Bay. Say hello to everyone at B-Ham. Lisa and I should be in Glacier Bay on Saturday, weather and sea dependent.

Pat, I see you two are again having a fun & relaxing cruise & I enjoy your writing & photos of it. Thanks for sharing. We also use the same one burner Coleman Stove for cooking & after trying several others think it the best of any so far.

We were just talking about you guys (favorabley, of course)! We are here at Squalicum for the Bellingham is Back II tomorrow through Sunday, and then we are headed back out Sunday after breakfast, and will be staying out until Wednesday. Our current plans are Shallow Bay at Sucia on Sunday evening, and somewhat open after that! We would love to see you, what are your plans?

Jay, thanks, we are having a great tine! We only wish we had your taste for adventure! We are way more timid!

DAY 6 - Blind Island to Chuckanut Bay. Back where our cruise began, because it is only a short way to Bellingham, where we need to be to get ready for Bellingham is Back II CBGT. Got a call from the Port of Bellingham to advise us that their security had noticed our truck, which we parked in the parking lot when we launched, has a flat tire. Phooey!

DAY 7 - Chuckanut Bay to Squalicum Harbor. Got up early, made coffee and did Baxter duty to shore. Got the dinghy back up on the roof and had a quick breakfast, and then into Squalicum Harbor! Got tied up, and about four other boats are already here! AAA changed the flat for the spare, and Les Schwab fixed the flat, all is good now! Drinks and conversation with the other C-Brats on the dock this afternoon and evening, looks to be a good one here starting tomorrow!

Hi Pat,
We will be in Anacortes tomorrow getting the boat ready to go. We also have planned to go to Sucia on Sunday and stay for a couple of days. We'll try to catch up with you when we're there.
