Cruiser prices

Hi:
We are potential C-Dory owners. Currently we are looking at a 1997 Cruiser that is set up with a Honda 50hp four stroke and a Honda 15hp four stroke.
While the interior is in good condition the hull has 12 separate 'dings' of various sizes; most of which perpetrate to the matting.
Additionally, the boat has been stored for the last four seasons with no kind of maintenance.
I am concerned that the motors may be seized or at best damaged by condensation. Also, I fear that the electronics; ( VHF radio, dept sounder, auto pilot ect), are inoperable due to four Michigan winters and summers with no attention.
I plan to have a mechanic check out the engines and will have someone look into the necessary fiberglass repairs, but in view of the asking price I fear that the boat cost plus repairs will be excessive.
We have checked out the Cruisers listed on the internet. The prices vary from $10,000 to $40,000.
What I am attempting to discover is what actual current selling prices really are. Asking prices and selling prices are often worlds apart; especially with the high gas costs we are all living with these days.
I would really appreciate information on actual 22 Cruiser selling prices that may have sold in the past six months.

Jim, I bought my '94 after it having been "stored' for 6 years with "no maintenance". All I did, except for cleaning, which was considerable, was have the carbs rebuilt, the waterpumps rebuilt and that was all. I would not think of your out of service period as a problem. Go for it if the price is right.

Jim, If this boat has a single 50 hp engine, I think you'll be very disappointed with the performance. Any 22 owners agree?
 
Although I consider myself a pretty good negotiator (unreasonable, some would say) I've bought two in the past few years and paid asking price for both. Maybe I'm slipping, but I think it is more a function of the true value of these boats. Also, I think the higher the price of fuel, the more these relatively low fuel-cost boats are desired. The 50hp on the 22 footer seems inadequate based on what others have. Check those asking prices listed in the 'for sale' section. They seem appropriate. Good luck.

I can tell you from my experience with the C-Dory market place that the difference between the "Asking/Selling" price is no more then 5% in most cases.

Now as far as 22 cruiser you have found on the internet, please forward to me all those you found for under $20,000 as soon as possible. Please!!!

I can also second the opinion that the 50hp motor will be a disappointment unless you don't plan on taking anyone boating with you or provisioning for a cruise, because the boat will not perform under load with that motor.

As far as the dings go...they can be corrected without any great expense.

I have never placed any value in old electronics or used motors when deciding the value of a boat. I always figure on replacing both in most cases.

I agree with the other guys. You might want to rethink the 50hp. We had a 70 hp Suzuki our first season, it was a nice engine but we were usually loaded down with gas and stuff and felt that it didn't have the extra oomph we felt we needed. Our 90hp Suzuki is great! Most CD-22's are powered with a minimum of 75 hp.
 
Sure agree with all above. The asking price and sellling price are usually close, unless there is a bad survey--even then, the boats are easy to fix.

The engines are most likely OK. If they turn over and have good compression then they should be OK--but get the mechanic's check.
Dings are very easy to fix...but if the boat is poorly maintained it should be priced accordingly.

If you are prepared to trade in the engine or sell it, perhaps the boat could be viable--but with just the 50, this will be a dissapointing ride.

I would put the value of the boat low because of the engine and questionable maintance. If the electronics are 10 years old, they are probably out of date.
 
Everything everyone else has said here sounds exactly correct. The hull is most likely not going to be a problem, it is repairable to the max. Plan on a repower with a 90 [Honda, Suzuki, whatever]. Subtract whatever you can get from the sale of the 50. Don't know about electronics, but it sure sounds like an upgrade will be in order. Figure it out, check against the other CD22 cruisers for sale, assume that for the most part, the boat will sell for the asking price or close to it, then make your decision!
 
Enough people have discussed the motor. BTW: I was told a full carb
rebuild is nearly $1,000. Not sure on that - for a 90hp. Fortunately,
we did not need one.

A few options to consider: trailer, floor boards (I really like floor
boards), trim tabs and a swim platform. If all of those are important
to you and need to be added, that will cost something in the
range of $3000-$3,500.

I spent a good deal of money adding shore power ($1,000, roughly),
new VHF+antenna ($350), GPS/Sonar ($550), stereo (Mmmm...I forget
exactly...part of it was a Christmas present anyhow).

But, in the end, I have exactly the boat I want. Well, minus a windlass,
but that is rant for a new message. Let's just say if I can ever get FedEx
to actually allow me the privilege of obtaining my package, I will have
the windlass situation rectified.

Oh, and minus a Digital AM/FM antenna. A guy needed to cross my boat,
managed to slip, and instead of grabbing the cabin roof rail, grabbed
the antenna hard to enough to break it. So, we'll soon have photos of
the interior of Digital's AM/FM antenna. I haven't checked to see if the
fiberglass was defective or not. Probably not. No need to speculate if
alcohol was involved. It was.

What a coincidence... I'm 98% certain I looked at this boat a couple of weeks ago while down in TC. On 23 near Chubbs Corner, right? Used car lot? I was surprised when I discovered after examining the hull that it was a 97. This boat looked pretty rough to me, and with the 50 on it I wouldn't consider it myself. Looked like it had sat out in the weather tooooo long. Life is too short to spend fixing up a money pit... been there & done that once before. Have been shopping for about 3 years now. Still waiting for that right boat to show up someplace close to MI. In the meantime I have a nice 15 ft Whaler to fish on & take the kids tubing. Decks & Docks down near Pontiac has had a few nearly new CD22s for sale. I would keep my eye there... they advertise on Boattrader.com.
