Critter Corner

Not that I had any doubts, but y'all making the kind comments about Dana were spot on. They picked the wrong model.

In exchange for getting Yogi for "free", the photographer snapped up a bunch of pics with Dana and Yogi which we'll be getting soon - here are two proofs.

OK...maybe now I'm done braggin'.

Bill,

They both look fabulous! The only thing that could make them look better is to have you in the photo next to them (for contrast  ).

Spent all day Friday and most of Saturday building a kitty coop outside my eldest daughters home in Northern VA. Her cats wanted to go outside more (they walk on a leash sometimes) but it's a chore for the kids to do. We built this 7X7X7 enclosure on her back patio, put a cat door in her old dog door (she used to have a Weimaraner too).

It's all pressure treated covered with field fence on the top and chicken wire on the sides. Had a 3' screen door for people and lots of shelves for the felines to recline on. So far, they love it, have already caught a vole, a couple of skinks and are eyeing a very cheeky Carolina Wren that likes to sit on a top shelf. Only downside is that it was about 97+ degrees at the peak of the day but we did have a little shade. Glad to be home again in the Northern Neck and on the water!

I really didn't want to post a sad event without trying to offer up a happy ending, too. On June 10, 2010, we lost our 11 1/2 year old Golden Retriever, Cosmo, to hemangiosarcoma. This is a fairly common vascular cancer for Goldens, and his passing came fast. We were evolving through the various stages of shock and mourning, and then I noticed pictures of Goldens popping up on the computers in the house. Yesterday (October 4, 2010), we brought Murphy home. We adopted him from StarRise Goldens in Morgantown, WV, having learned of the litter from Alicia Maxey at Eclipse Goldens in St. Joseph, Illinois. Murphy's parents are Hank and Soarin'.

Anyway, here are some pics of Cosmo and Murphy...we love our Golden friends!

Although Cosmo was not a "boat dog", we plan on Murphy being a full fledged crew member! More pictures in the Comfortably Numb album. Thanks for indulging me!

Congratulations on the new family member, Mark. We certainly understand that feeling of loss... and then understanding that you have more room in your heart.

Welcome aboard, Murphy!

Start him young in the boat. We introduced little Izzy to the boat as soon as we brought her home from the shelter, and she has become an amazingly adaptable traveler, on land and water. Murphy certainly has that boat-dog-extraordinaire look about him! :D

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan B. and Izzy :cat

Well, it is time for couple more "Baxter Barrett Anderson, Dog of the Desert" pics then!

Introducing Rusty, a Yorkshire/Brussels Griffon. He has joined the crew of Discovery.

He has taken to the water like a true boat dog.

He is three months old and we are coping with the new puppy problems, house training, chewing and sleeping all day whining all night. He will learn or we will get smarter. We haven't had an inside dog for twenty years. My last dog was a Chesapeake Retriever.

Wow, Brent and Dixie - congrats on the new family member! Joan has many of the same problems with me (house breaking, sleeping all day, whining all night), but has learned to cope. Some of us don't outgrow... well, you know.

Darn cute pooch!

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Diana and I were thoroughly impressed with the Schnauzers that Joel and Susan own, plus Rusty was a favorite as well. I offered to adopt Emma and Rusty on the spot, but their moms and dads were not willing to part with a family member.

Susan, take care of "my" dog. Tell Rachel, that she is "my" dog.... :D

Last Tuesday (October 5, 2010), I posted some pics in this forum/topic of our late Golden Retriever Cosmo, and of our new Golden boy, Murphy. Well, Murphy got his first boat ride today, and performed like a champ. Mostly, a sleeping champ.

Here are some pics:

Murphy preparing to get underway on his maiden voyage.

When do I get to steer the Comfortably Numb, Dad?

Why can't I jump in?

Murphy has found his spot on the Comfortably Numb...in the berth...a good place to nap.

Murphy entertaining us with some singing while underway. It was "O Sole Mio", I think.

Yesterday we brought home "Sookie" a three-year-old "expresso" color female labradoodle. Other than some housebreaking issues she is adjusting well to her new home. She was to be a breeding female but did not get pregnant so the breeder decided to spay her and put her up for adoption. Same breeder as Ike. Photos coming!

Angel_4.jpg

As many of you may remember we lost our 17 year old "miss Priss" exactly one month after Marie's mother passed on last December. Time has to heal the broken heart--in more ways than one!

Early in Sept. we heard that there was a "minature poodle" at the Pensacola pound. We went out there immediately, and could not find any poodle. After Labor day, we went dog looking. Nothing at the Humane society. The "hotel for dogs" had a sheltie/corgy mix--which Marie liked. There as a waiting peroid, so on the way home, I asked Marie if that was really the dog she wanted. Her response was that it was a sweet dog and needed a home. I suggested that we stop at the pound again. About the 3rd cage we looked into, this black minature (17 lb) poodle came bounding to the front. Marie got a leash, and we played with her. She was a real winner. As we were walking past the cage, I mentioned to Marie that was where the dog was from....she looked at me--and said
"this dog will never see the inside of a kennel again, she is coming home to live with us tonight!" So this is how "Angel" came to live with the Austins. She has been such a comfort to both of us during the difficult times in the last few weeks. She is 4 years old, and her old mistress fell on hard times and eventually a nursing home. We have her medical records--and she has adapted well to our life style. We are both in love with a dog again! Our vet says the Angel has hit the doggie lottery.

Come Monday, and I had my first cardiac rehab appointment. We left angel in the living room as usual. When we arrived back home, she had gotten up on a 4 foot high serving bar, and knocked off the bowl of trick or treat candy. She had carefully taken 10 pieces to the sofa, and unwrapped each one--and eatten them. Fortunately there were no bad side effects and she missed one dinner! So now any food has to be locked up tight!

Hi Dr. Bob,

Joan said to tell you that our furry kids can be great stress relievers. Amazing how petting one of these critters can lower our blood pressure. I have no doubt that Angel has truly hit the doggie lottery. When we went to the shelter "just to look," one of our friends said, "There is a cat out there that has no idea how lucky she is about to become." :D I see little Izzy hop up in Joan's lap or snuggle with me on the couch, I know how fortunate we all are. We are happy to know that you and Marie have another dog in your lives.

One never "takes the place of" one we lost. But, they do show us that we have more room in our hearts for even more love. And I can't help but think that has to be really good for one's heart.

The last few posts on this thread have been heart-warming. Congrats to you two and all those out there who have found more room in their hearts and homes.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan (and Izzy the wonder cat)

A Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard.

During the night the folks came across this scene.

An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep. He
chose baby Jesus as his comfort.

No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night.

Merry Christmas, in advance!
Joe. :teeth :thup

And we can hope that some Wise Man saw the Gift and took him home to a real place to live.

Merry Christmas! :love :love :hug :dog

Thanks Joe, hope to see you at SBS 11 and will if the TSA comes to their senses.

We have a new addition to the family!
We brought Gustav* home today and he is oh so friendly and gentle. I think we have a good one here. I haven't taken pictures but here is a link with some photos of him.
LINKEY
*It is too early to tell if that is the name he'll keep but we don't really have any other ideas that stand out. I suspect he has a silly streak in which case Goose is a possible nickname.
Our docklife loving dog, Molly, unexpectedly died last month and Adrienne has been moping around a bit and not getting her daily walks without her walking partner. It has been fun watching Adrienne exibit nesting behavior prior to bringing Gustav home.

Good looking boy - congrats!

And ditto on the rescue route praise - PetFinder is a great resource for that.
