I need to move this boat so please don't waste my time...Don't contact me unless you have cash and want to buy a c-dory. I am not going to send a tone of pics. If you are going to spend 20k on a boat come and look at it. Also I am not interested in meeting you halfway accross the country nore do I want you bayliner as a partial trade...These boats are hard to finance so do even try it will be a waste of my time and yours.

I always respond to the admonition, "Don't waste my time."

Yeah, right...especially when you want my $22,000 in cold cash with no sea trial (unless you left the throttle handle on that 4 stroke that we don't know the make or horsepower of ???).

”Don’t waste my time”
Ironically you’re wasting a lot of your own time because your Craigslist post is so pathetically lacking in information and what can best be described as ‘curb appeal’. The few people who will call you will be asking you a lot of questions about the boat (wasting your time) which could have been answered by a little more detail:
Make, horsepower, and hours of engine
Make of trailer
Why the steering wheel is missing
Auxiliary equipment and status
These boats almost sell themselves so it’s always interesting to see how much of a handicap a prospective seller can give himself to still get the job done.

It looks like a mercury engine 2stroke ( maybe 4 stroke ) and I think it's a EZ loader single axcel galv trailer . Yes he would do himself a favor if he listed more details just my 2cents

The "Throne" is missing also. And what is all of that wiring laying on the floor.???
He said it like he wanted to but not how he should have. Needs major lesson in PR.

Having sold a number of items on craigslist I understand his frustrations. I have left work to meet someone to show a boat at a set time and place only to have them never show up. No call, not thank you anyhow, they just fail to show up. Amazingly it happens in my work a lot also.

There are also the many questions that need not be asked if people would read the ad's. Now this mans ad leaves a lot to be desired but I am currently running a ad for a 17 ft clc wood kayak with paddle for $xx.00. In the last week I have had 9 calls wanting to know the following details- how much, how long, what is it made of, who's the maker? is that a kayak or a canoe? ( I included 4 pictures of the kayak in the ad) My ad also stated that its in marysville and everyone want to know where its located?????

First time posters at craigslist get very frustrated with this kind of stupidity but you just have to learn to deal with it and your items will sell.

When I sold my c-dory I had one guy come look at it for a hour. I gave him the full tour after leaving work early. In the end he stated that he had no money at all to offer but just wanted to see the inside of one in case when he retires in 18 years he may want to get one.

Matt,

In this economy I can not image having to sell high dollar items to make a living. I have been reading your posts and others about you for quite awhile. It looks to me that you are very successful at it and you have a stellar reputation.
Continued good luck to you.

Jack............a retired man and very thankful for it

My goodness. How can anyone complain for any reason about Craigslist? It is not only the world's most effective set of sales tools, it doesn't cost a thing to use. Not being good at it isn't stupidity. Using it when it causes one such anguish, on the other hand, is perhaps unwise.

And Mark, my goodness again. Aren't you a public employee? You and Tom should be thankful for the people who are the public. Even the bad guys and the stupid ones on free public service web sites. If your guys don't break into the houses Tom sells to his guys, and Tom's guys aren't smart enough to sell their junk on Craigslist to get the money to buy a house for your guys to break into, then neither one of you will be able to buy anything off Craigslist.

I think Centerisland's post was meant to be humorous. Let's not rip the whole world because the guy who posted the ad is a grouch. Maybe he is just old like me. Although, today I am less on the grouchy side and more inclined to have compassion for the younger guys still working to gain the wisdom of years. Then again, I do think the crabby ad is funny.

I have another theory: perhaps his wife said, "Sell the boat," and he doesn't want to... but at least he can say he's trying.

When I talked to the guy who had the boat that Tex bought and refit, that guy started out by telling me that he had "$100,000 in the boat."

I was perhaps a bit blunt, but I told him, "I don't want to buy your boat, but I will let folks who know C-Dorys know that you want to sell it. BUT, you have to stop saying ridiculous stuff like that $100 grand figure. It might impress your friends, but I can buy a brand new one for that amount AND have enough left over to go cruising for a couple years. So, if you want to sell it, get real about a price."

As any business owner will tell you, nothing "sells itself." If you make the product attractive and promote it well, you do have a better chance of selling it. Seems pretty apparent that the crabby guy with the ad needs to learn a bit about properly presenting his "product" (and could use a proof-reader). Starting out with a chip on your shoulder is going to chase away many perspective buyers.

Perhaps this as an ad headline: "Who wants to buy this damn boat?"

I tried Craigslist for a couple things earlier this year... good product, good price, well described, nicely photographed. Didn't get a single legit inquiry, although I had some interesting correspondence from a foreigner who wanted to buy each of "your item". Maybe I should have been crabbier?

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Here is his new ad for the boat, Note the url.

This is a 22ft c-dory that has spent most of its life in fresh water on the Columbia. No bottom paint and always stored on trailer. Boat looks like it would from the factory with no electronics or heater. Clean 1989 boat with 2002 4 stroke 115hp motor with around 200hrs on it. 206-353-1528

I would trade for an air Nautique or Malibu Sunsetter.
