Costco boat?

We were in Costco yesterday and they had a Coleman rubber (PVC)boat with transom 8ft($499) with a Coleman 5 hp ($900) (short shaft)all for $1400. Has Any one ever heard about a Coleman engine I wonder if it's a tohatsu rebadged ? and the PVC boat I don't know if that would hold up to harsh fl weather ? Anyone else see one of these in Costco

Hypalon will hold up better than PVC, but there are plenty of PVC dinghies out there. If the boat is going to be left in the sun, I'd go with hypalon. Or, you could put a cover over the PVC to make it last longer. Or, store it out of the sun. We've had a West Marine Zodiac dinghy (that is PVC) that is about 10 years old. It gets stored inside, has been on top of our boat for a couple months at a time, and shows no sign of sun deterioration.

Of course, there are different levels of quality with any construction. I'm not familiar with the Coleman boats. Can you go by a West Marine to compare their current offerings with how this particular boat looks, for construction? If it is the boat from these reviews, it has an inflatable floor/keel (good), but aluminum floor panels (more weight, more to store when deflated). This boat weighs considerably more than our U260 from WM, but it will take a bigger outboard. The sport boats (with an inflatable floor) will also plane, where our flat bottom (with a slat floor) won't.

This is pretty inexpensive. If it doesn't hold up, you aren't out a bundle.

So long as it holds up to normal wear & tear and UV rays, all well and good. 9ft and weighing 70lbs is starting to get up there. Of course, it depends on what you want to use it for? If it is just two of you puttering from the anchorage to the shore or dock, smaller would work. If there are three of you, or you are going to be exploring all the coves and bays within a mile of your boat, I guess bigger is better.
Another thing I considered when I was looking for an inflatable was the ease of getting it on and off the boat by one person. I settled on a 7 footer weighing 38 lbs.

Just my unsolicited 2 cents worth while I wait for the coffee to brew !

The word on The Briggs engine is is not to be used in saltwater . If its the same air cooled one they introduced a few years ago . It went over like a lead balloon.
I just saw one of the new Lehr propane powered 2.5s this A.M. That is made by a real outboard manufacturer [havent figured out which one yet ,but I suspect Suzuki] and it looks interesting as its light,runs on a big tank or a 1 Lb bottle for an hour ,is cleaner ,and is water cooled with a real prop ,nut and cotter pin arrangment .
Looks pretty well made. A 9.9 is on the way as well.
Makes the Torqueed look pretty expensive and less than half the price .

Yes this is the boat and engine . I think the price was $499 boat maybe I was mistaken will look again today . Marc the engine is a water cooled 5hp looks similar to merc (tohatsu) with gas tank in head . I'm not sure how it will hold up and at $899 maybe a tohatsu would be better choice for a few $ more ?
I own an 1989Archiles 7ft boat but does not have a transom . and no motor mounting system . I always wanted a transom boat I see WM has a ru260 for sale also for $699 just have to see which will serve my needs . Jim

The Bombard AX1 made by Zodiac. If you Google custom search top L/H corner and put in inflatables you should find the thread on this topic including pics of the AX1.

I would stick with as light a dinghy as you can easily handle. I have one small one--have owned the AXI and AX2, as well as West Marine 6'&' and 8'6" models. They did OK with care. My best inflatable is an older Avon made boat, of Hypalon. It is over 10 years old, has an air floor and inflatable keel--about 70 lbs. It will take a 10 hp and plane.


Stay with known outboard manufactures. Litterally your life might depend on it. I use a merc 2 stroke 3.5 hp on my dinhies--but I really like the Suzuki small engines. The Tahotsu are great buys. I don't believe that Coleman can get one of these at this price.
 
BTW- The Lehr product looks to be Yamaha- the current 2.5 and the last gen 4/6. Specs are the same and the handles are identicle on the motors.

We bought a Bombard Max 2 Aero 7'10'' long weighs in at 55 pounds,has an inflatable floor and keel,it takes up to a 4 hp from www.Defender.com It currently sells for $929 a 2.5 hp Yamaha was $800.00 purchased locally. I strongly recommend you buy an electric air pump because if you use the pump supplied with the boat you will be too tired to go anywhere by the time you get it blown up.. Make sure the pump can do the high pressure required for floors if you get a boat with an inflatable floor. A good twelve volt pump might cost up to 200 dollars. The pumps inflate or deflate nice option and if you have come this far with blowing money on boats what's another couple hundred? I know Defender has replaced boats that were a problem and I think they have a nice selection if you want to go shopping. For a few more dollars you can go with brand names that will hold their value. I can only wonder where you take that Coleman motor for service. just my opinion, but I hate buying the same equipment twice.

Ok guys the boat seems like the one Jim and Roger came up with. the price is $499 for the boat with aluminum floor boards and inflateable keel . with oars and pump . I sure wish I had gotten the transom back in 1989 ( my archilles still holds air ) but just for rowing might sell it if I buy this one ? Costco every once in a while comes up with a good deal . The engine seems like it is the Parson 5hp for $849 its down $50. I think Dr. Bob is right on with getting tohatsu or maybe used small outboard vs this chinese model? Good thread Costco only has a few of these boats in fl. Jim
 
Air cooled outbord? had one...a little Sears 3hp...LOUD! Very LOUD.
 
For what its worth I've had the WM RU 260 for over 15 years and the boat has worked reliably. Had to have a valve replaced at one point. I run it with a Tohatsu 6 -- same one I use as my kicker on the 22. The PVC has worked nicely. The costco boat may be similar.
