comfortable sleeping on a c-25

My wife and I have a C25 called Fan-C-Dory. She is well equipt and we both love her. Here is the problem, I am 6'3" and my wife is 5'7", due to our general size we both are not a good fit for the v-berth together, so one sleeps in the v-berth and the other on the main cabin berth. We find the cushions uncomfortable when sleeping, especially the cabin berth. Any suggestions on making us more comfortable when sleeping and any ideas on clothes and personal items storage. Thanks.

If you open up the cabin bulkhead (see link from Charlie above), you can also extend the berth by building a small platform to fit aft of the berth on the port side (e.g. where your feet are when you're sitting on the forward port seat. Also, as shown in the link above, a memory foam mattress topper makes the berth more comfortable. I used to do that on my 22. The memory foam definitely makes things more comfortable but I found it a bit of a pain to move around.

A good alternative to the memory foam mattress topper is what I did on my Tomcat. I had custom mattresses made to fit the berth. My total cost for custom mattresses was around $1100 including a layer of hypervent underneath. For me this was a much simpler solution and way better than the foam topper since I need to move things around to get at the storage underneath.

Yes, the foam used on the boats is very uncomfortable. Memory foam over the top made a HUGE improvement.

I guess being only 5'10" does have some advantages. Although I wish I had a few more inches in height, especially w/ what I do. Seems the tall guys always get the respect.

I second the thermarest pad under the vberth mattress, makes for a very comfortable bed. I also use a shorter thermarest under the table cushions lifts up the seat by an inch or so and take the harshness out of big bumps.

Our Pygmy Kayak kits came with 12"x16" Trermarest pads for use as seats. I will throw one in the boat for Adrienne to use on the passenger seat. She usually sits on a throwable cushion so's she can see out the window. We'll see if this actually works or just makes her slide around. Mebby some anti-skid shelf liner could help.
We have a 2.5'x3.5' water resistant dog bed we got at Costco that has a Thermarest style pad inside. Hmmm...

Our CD-25 has shelves in the v-berth that are very helpful for storage; we use ventilated bins that fit on there nicely. You might try sleeping on a diagonal if you don't want to cut out the bulkhead - you'll gain a couple inches that way. The factory calls that a " 6'3" berth"... along the lines of "it weighs 6,500 all up on the trailer." We put memory foam (2") in the v-berth, and that works great for the comfort. Since it moves you up just a bit on the hull, you do gain a teensy bit in width and length, as well.

Fan-C-Dory used to belong to my buddy Dave (and Jan and Snack) - a nice, clean boat.

Enjoy that 25!

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I am 6'3" and Cindie is 5'7" and we both sleep in our V-berth with our 40" daugther with no problems. We sleep on the standard cushions but will likely put in some thermarest pads we already have for a longer trip coming up. I sleep at an angle along the wall on the port side. That side is longest and widest and I can stretch out just barely when I need to. Padding along the wall was critical for me so I can even lay against it as needed. Cindie is in the middle with no problems and Aven is over on the helm side where the electronics limit the length and the width is narrower as well. We keep the filler cushion in at all times and store our generator, extra pfds, manuals, and some emergency lighting gear under there.

I don't really need any more length but I do need to sleep along that one wall to be comfortable.
