Colors?

Curious as to a list of all the different colors offered on C-Dorys through the years.
So far I am aware of:
Black
Dark Blue
Dark Green
Grey
Bright Red

And I just saw the craigslist posting for a 22 Cruiser with what appears to be a light tan or beige? Link here: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/boa/5948648154.html

or could that be grey in the photo?

Anyway, just for curiosity, were any other colors ever used? And have any been all white without the stripe?

The strip and the interior Sunbrella both appear to be beige. You probably can custom order any color you wish. There are many gel coat colors. I have seen yellow, light blue and, maroon as well in C Dories.

I think I read somewhere that the blue ones have the best performance AND fuel mileage.

I can say with absolute certainty: chicks did the blue ones.

----------

Please note that the owners and moderators of The C-Brats do not endorse, and, in fact, barely allow, the statements in this post. Void where prohibited by good taste. Your mileage will, undoubtedly, vary. Use of this product, especially the blue ones, may cause euphoria, big silly grins, and loss of desire to be a productive member of society.

I can also say with certainty:

"chicks dig the blue ones"

Amazing what the change of a letter can do. BTW, Journey On is green, but I don't think that's the reason it's not a chick magnet. I think it's the operator.

Scott, congrats on the new boat. Regarding a camper back and cover, I'd check to see if there are any canvas shops near you. I used Bentley's in Portland for my camper back, and bought a used King (Seattle) cover. Search the Brats site for other options. Get several quotes, as prices vary.

I'd talk to the factory about the swim step. You'll probably need to remove a gas tank to install it. If you're not comfortable doing that, a dealer like Sportcraft here in Portland could do it for you.

Welcome to the gang!

Scottc,

Welcome aboard! Angola Canvas makes an excellent boat cover

Occasionally an owner takes a swim platform off, and sells it on this site. You can order from the factory, or you can buy an after market from one of distributers such as Defender

The camper back--either a local canvas shop, or King Marine Canvas. The quality has varied. I have gotten good ones, and not so good ones. If you use a local canvas shop, you can spec. the better vinyl, the the of insect screens you want (If you are going to boat in the Delta--I would definitely get the "no see em" screen
Here is King site. If you spec the sheet clear vinyl, have the edges bound, use of Tenara Thread (Tenara thread is a goretex type of material, and is far more resistant to the sun than the standard dacron threads.

You will find that this site, and the C Brats are the best way of getting information, and that there is a wonderful extended family who partakes in gatherings, and cruises. One of the best is the Delta Cruise in March. At least drop by and visit the boats to get ideas.

You got a great deal on what appears to be a very good boat!

On edit, I see you are from Idaho. One of our most active members is "Two Bears" from Orofino Idaho!

There is also:

"Cabernet" or maroon
Light Blue = Robin's egg
Tan - I think it was listed as Wheat
Yellow (was rare)
and there was a (I believe) one time reverse out, Hull was dark blue and teh shear stripe was white.

Not trying to tip the apple cart.....BUT, this brings up a few thoughts. We all love the iconic CD colors and schemes but I'd love to see some other iterations of the classic design. As Harvey mentioned there may have been a dark hull and white stripe before. That sounds awesome. I'm a big fan of the "Fighting Lady yellow" and the light blue pastel that you see on many bigger boats. I think a full color hull and white stripe scheme would look amazing!

Is the iconic color scheme important to you guys??? IMO it's the hull design and shape that makes the CD... not the classic colors. Although I love the colored stripe and the way our boats look now, don't misunderstand me.

I really think that the brand may have to tweak their styling a tad or compromise with certain things to reach the NEXT generation of CD enthusiasts. Whattya guys think? How can we attract the next crop of CD buyers? Would a color change be enough?...... I want the brand to endure and bring in new blood.

Jason,
I can't find the picture of the "reverse out" model, but personally, I didn't like it much. The White shear strip blended in to the white hull, so you really didn't see the "shear" line. The iconic C-Dory look, is (for me at least,) the "Brand" mark, and when I am on the water I can pick out a C-Dory from over a mile a way by the shear strip or that head-on look that the cut out on the at stripe around the bow makes.

I don't remember what the brow color was on the "reverse out" version: if it was the normal brow banded color or if it was white and the top was where the color was. Sorry.

Just not my cup of paint I guess. That's what happens when you get old school and set in your ways. For me, the C-Dory Brand is the shape, simplicity, the traditional shear and brow stripe, and the hull shape. If I had a vote, I'd say keep that. If someone wants curvey, corners and edges, big swashes of color like a 40 foot motorhome on the side, and more rake and rounded windows, they can go look at Seaswhirl, Beneteau or Bayliner.

The C-Dory is the VW bug (or bus) on the water. As long as they don't mess with it, there will be a market from those who see the advantages of practicality, simplicity and heritage. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Doesn't mean there aren't hings to do to improve or attract customers. Just do that and keep the changes on the inside.

JMHO, YMMV.

Hmmm...yeah. I'm not thinking of a "reverse out" then. I'm envisioning the entire hull being Fighting Lady yellow or pastel blue and then have the brow/shear stripe white.

I see your point though Harvey, about not fixing something that is not broken. Maybe an updated interior or some different cockpit arrangements might do the trick.

ScotC. Welcome to C-BRATS and to the C-Dory family. Didn't get to see your boat but sounds like it was a good deal. And, your registered here so look around. Everything you could want to know, learn, or see about C-Dory's is here, and it's a great place. Lot's of good, useful current information, a great group of folks and a good place to get ideas and meet folks with like interests.

Enjoy, and Congrats,

Harvey

i want to thank everyone very much for all the replies you are all very kind. my name is scott my wife is kathy and we have a 6yr old boy named cannon,it is our intention to bring our c-dory to spruce island alaska which is about 7 miles across from kodiak alaska.we hope to have many adventures and we will share them with our new c-dory friends

One comment about the "new color scheme"--with solid dark colors on the hull and a white stripe. My first ocean going sailboat was a Columbia 29 in bright red hull...I learned then, why most boats don't have a dark color hull. They are very hard to keep looking perfect. Think about how we have to compound and wax our dark strips to keep them looking nice--and then transfer that work to maybe twice as much--down nearer the water. White hull is for me! Also the darker hulls are going to be hotter in the summer sun. One friend had a boat painted entirely black, with a light grey gunnel stripe---when he changed the hull to white it made a real difference in the interior temperature in the summer.
