chinese manufactured fiberglass boat???

i'm sure to get some responses on this one. (please, no replies just to bash) my long term has my sights set on a tomcat or glacier bay. however, i'm holding off one more year before the big purchase, and so i need something (temporary this season) just to drop in for a few miles offshore. can anyone chime in on this 17.7 foot $5k chinese fiberglass toy? it has just enough cabin to keep me out of the spray, and fishing 5-6 hours of fishing in or around the bay. then i figure i can transfer safety gear, electronics and even the outboard as my kicker to my big purchase next season, or just gift it to my in-laws. my other option is a cdory 16 or 22, but then i'd probably be committed a few seasons with having to eventually deal with selling. so what'd be a good temporary step solution to getting in some bay cruising this year? again, the thought of a chinese manufactured boat, even as a temporary boat, is something i'd need some informed advice on.

That looks like a fun way to gamble with 5K. I have no idea what might show up, if anything. The pictures show several different boats with different equipment. The advertising copy says no motor, but do you get a steering station? Any electrical? Running lights as shown? Horn and flood light as shown? Coast Guard certification? Can it pass CG flotation certification? For what horsepower? For how many people? Could you even license it in any state?

Alibaba says that it is a 17.7 foot boat that weighs 935 lbs. A 16 foot C-Dory (with a weight saving balsa core for strength) weighs more than that. How did they get it so light? My guess is that you would find out and not like the reason. Especially a few miles off shore. And especially with 8 people on board. The 8 people claim should be a red flag.

I would stay away from the Huabo (pronounce Whew boy!).

my budget isn't $5k. but YES, your thoughts are what i suspect. (it's not a posting that doesn't invite criticism) however, keep in mind, i was only referring to this as a (temporary) solution of having something in my driveway to head out in june (if only boat leasing were an option . . .

anyway a $5k throw-away is a a loss, but so is the searching, traveling, etc to come up with a decent turn-key boat, that i'm dumping before next season is also a $5k loss

if nothing else, you were pleasantly amused? yeah, the 8 person capacity on a 2 person boat was definitely the thing that broke my confidence in what might show up. i'm seriously looking for the 1st good cdory 16 for this season, and hope i can be geared up without too much fuss. i wasn't looking to pass on a $20k gift to the in-laws next year, but i don't want to be swimming back to shore either.

Might depend on the design. My 16' CE compliant RIB was placarded for 12 people.

Maybe the hull is mostly hollow and has lots of buoyancy.

Heck, in China they take tourists on rides down fairly big rivers on boats made of PVC pipes (or bamboo logs) lashed together. The ones used by the locals have good sized cars engines on the back for power (like long tail boats in Thailand).
 
This reminds me when Brianna bought a beautiful leather jacket off ebay for a heck of a cheap price, and the tracking information showed it coming all the way from China. It finally arrived and was made of plastic, like a cheap Halloween costume.

$5,000 will buy you a decent starter boat if you know what to look for. Craigslist should have quite a number of them to choose from. Back in 2011, we sold our 19.5' Glasply with a decent Garmin chartplotter and a good running Evinrude 115 hp two-smoke motor for $1700 to a guy on craigslist. It was an ugly spud but was seaworthy as hell. It probably still runs fine. Find someone else's older inexpensive boat and roll with it. Most of us started off this way and worked our way up to a nice vessel like the c-dory over many years. You don't need a lot of money, my first boat was $900, and when it wasn't blowing fuses in the controls of the old Johnson outboard, it was the funnest thing on the planet for me at the time.

thanks, that's the exact direction i'm headed. even invested in just a $5k hull, "made in china" is all the warning anyone needs. i just liked the super small pilot house configuration, so i threw up an inquiry to see if anyone had 1st hand knowledge. nothing but bass boats and 40 year old cruisers good for the landfill on the CL here in nevada. i don't have time to travel out of state right now, or i'd be looking at just cdory 16s
 
Take a look at the seller's other items. He shows the same boat in California for $11,950 with trailer and a 40 hp Chinese outboard. You should be able to go look at it and ask him to delete the outboard so you can buy one that can be serviced.

i was only looking at the $5k hull, and even THAT was more than enough of a crap shoot. would have been perfect to then transfer everything over to a 25’ next year including a new yamaha 25hp as my kicker.

A 25 hp "kicker" would be a mistake on a c Dory 25.
