Interesting thread providing valuable (more objective?) insights that you might not necessarily get here, where there is probably more of a tendency to preach to the choir, no"?

One issue raised in this thread is the use of "keel guards". Does anyone here recommend them, particularly for the Tom Cat?

Unfortunately, when they added all the image stealing warnings it threw the messages off and now you really can't tell for shure who said what. One of the posts has me talking about putting keelguards on my boat for Lake Huron, which I've never been near . . .

At any rate, a search on C-Dory will turn up quite a bit of material as a number of us with Whalers own them.
 
It's called "artistic license" and it inspired many . . . On Dusty I just retouched the photo . . . One of the hazards of the internet.
 
For the most part a very intelligent discussion of the C Dory, and some of its cousins. The C Dory is actually a very good boat for Florida--especially with air conditioning. I have to laugh a little about the unsinkable Whalers--yes unsinkable--but if you ever fill one up with water and swamp the engine--the boat has to be towed to get the water out. We rescued 5 people who had swamped a 13 footer and almost lost their lives because of cold water. They were out of range of VHF radio help--and no EPIRB. So just being unsinkable is not an assurance of survival.
I do respect the whalers--and they make a fine boat.
 
15' and above they'll keep the motor dry with everyone in them. When the "storm of the century" rolled through, at 5 am I had a call that the water was up, then the phone, and electricity went out, at about the time there was a pounding on the wall. I grabbed a flashlight and shined it out the window, to find my Whaler (plug out) on the trailer in front of the house, trying to float into in my window. I quickly grabbed the dog, opened the door to a wall of water and waded out to the boat, climbed in, unstrapped the back straps and let the trailer sink, unsnapped the cable and let the front end of the trailer sink, fired up (as yet hadn't put the plug in), and motored down the street picking up people as my home filled with 4 feet of water (it sat on a 6 foot mound above other homes in the development). I eventually thought of the plug and simply put it in.

I have been on a 21 swamped and other than sluggish behavior, you wouldn't know it was swamped.

I wouldn't sell a Whaler short, took a long time to part with my two big ones even after I'd bought the C-Dory (and I still own a 17 Montauk).
 
Waterskiers skiing too close to a dock swamped my 13' whaler and kept the wakes coming till I yelled at them. I pulled the plug and tried to let it self-bail, but it was too slow for me so I started the engine and drove it away to drain it. Took about a minute under power. They will keep the power head above water while swamped, even in fairly rough conditions.
 
I think it interesting... that many of us moved from whalers to C-Dorys... I had a beautiful 17' whaler but hated it as I always got wet and cold..it got so I diden't want to go out unless the sea was flat and the sun was hot... then it was miserable sitting in the sun... I had thought about adding canvas, but that was still not the answer....the C-Dory was and is... warm, dry and comfortable.

Joel, I had three whalers at one time and never thought I would give any of them up, even though they rode rough, were wet, and hot in bright sun. But my back just wouldn't take the ride any longer. Love the C Dory, every time I pull away from the dock, dry, comfortable, and a decent ride, not great, but decent.
 
We had two Whalers prior to the C-Dory, a 13' and a 15' Dauntless. We cruised the waters from Olympia WA to Seattle Wa in both. The 13 never made it past Gig Harbor--just too rough riding. The 15 however was great for two and not bad for six people if the distances weren't too great. It took a lot to give up the unsinkable quality of the Whaler, but the C-Dory convinced us and we have been glad we "upgraded" to a warm dry cabin! Our range has increased greatly, having now covered from Olympia WA to Saltspring Island B.C. and many points in between.
 
Yeah, the cruising ability of the C-Dory is just its greatest feature. I do not think there is or every will be a better Northwest cruiser...
