Charlie- I am happy to read in your letter to the editor that an effort is being made to restore the SS United States. Dotty and I often cruised down the Delaware to where she was tied up in Philadelphia. It broke our hearts to see her derelict and stripped. At that same time, a little further down the river at the old Philadelphia Navy Base you could see many inactive Naval ships including carriers and the battle ship Iowa, with one of it's 16 inch guns still hanging low from the onboard explosion. On the otherhand, being from NJ, we were immensely proud when the battleship New Jersey was refurbished and tied up in Camden, across from the SS United States. When we left NJ for the PNW we gave our collection of Navy recruiting posters to the Battleship New Jersey Museum. I did keep this one.

Thanks for all the comments. I just took exception to an old former submariner saying he had tracked the SS United States at over 50 knots while at periscope depth. He probably remembers it that way and I don't have a problem with that, just that no ship (no big displacement hull ship) ever went that fast and I wanted to correct the info.

You know how those submariners are.... I still miss Don (Sneaks!).

I have been interested in the S S United States for many years. When I worked in the moving industry Mayflower Van Lines was asked to make a promo tour of the US with artifacts from the S S United States advertising an auction that was held in Norfolk where she was laying at that time.

We were to help the people that purchased the furnishings ect. to ship them. It was very interesting to tour the old girl. The auction did not go as well as everyone had hoped and we did not get rich from the shipping. However I had a lot of fun.

The story we got at that time was that she was going to Europe to be refurbished as a cruise ship. Alas that never happened and she was towed back to Philadelphia. She has been there for a long time. When ever I visit Philly we go by to take a look. I just read in one of our papers that now they are considering turning her into a gambling casino. I just hope she can be saved.

from Wikepedia...

"In November 2010, the [SS United States] Conservancy announced a plan to develop a "multi-purpose waterfront complex" with hotels, restaurants and a casino along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia at the proposed location for the stalled Foxwoods Casino project. A planned release of a detailed study for the site is scheduled for late November 2010, in advance of Pennsylvania's 10 December 2010 deadline for a deal aimed at Harrah's Entertainment taking over the casino project.[25] On December 16, 2010, the Gaming Control Board voted to revoke the casino's license.[26]"
