Canvas Snap Buttons

Anyone have any ideas on where to buy canvas snap buttons. I've been using the West Marine Canvas Snap kits but they don't install easily and often come apart after a few uses. They'll be used for curtains for a bimini.

Thanks!

Matt

I bought "Snap Fastener Studs 5/8" (Stainless), from Lowell Distributing. I think they are now called Lowell Direct www.lowelldirect.com Part number 2006, $18.95 per hundred. Their on line description is: "This Snap Fastener Stud is 100% Stainless Steel and is used in Cloth-to-Surface applications. #8 Screw 5/8" long." I know this is the stud and you want the snaps. They sell them too, I just don't have the part number. It is where I bought mine when making my window covers.

They are great folks to deal with. I bought the Sunbrella from them. They sell just about everything you need for sewing, sailmaking, fasteners, zippers, etc. and are great to talk to.

Go to their website and see what you can find. Happy shopping.

We've bought the snap kits at Lowes and West Marine. The kit contains about 7 sets of snaps (both sides) and the little tool to pound it on. No problems with rust on either. Sometimes they just come apart from the wear. On occasion, we'll put a bit of silicone on a Q-tip and run it around the snaps to keep them from corroding.

Best wishes,
Jim B

Try Defender Search for "Canvas Snaps". They have a variety of snaps, the tools needed to attach them, and the tools needed to install the canvas on the boat. Good price and good quality. Sure beats West Marine both for quality and price.

I suspect the "coming apart" is more from the setting than the actual snaps. I find that the anvil tool which comes with the snap kits does not work as well as the fittings which go on a square jawed pair of Vise Grips. I found one set for as low as $17 on the internet which was good for the standard snap through canvas. The full set is over $100, and you can get a specific tool for that price.

Hi Dr. Bob !! I was just thinking about you....
I was out in the boat this morning and noticed I have 12 snaps with rusting screws...darn upholsters trying to save money..... Guess I will just have to make a trip to Boaters World.... I always start out for a $5 item but never get out of there for less than $100....

Tortuga.....Go to Beacon Marine....it's near the entrance of Ventura harbor... I just got home from there...... I went looking for the screw in part of the snaps... West Marine wanted $1 each for them and they came in packs of 40.... Boaters world had the wrong size...but they were even more there..but in bags of 6......... Beacon Marine had them individually at $ .50 each..... much cheeper... and I got the 12 I needed... they had everything... all stainless...just what I wanted.

They also are the place to buy teak.... they didn't have the finger pulls I was looking for, but will get them in a few days.... I am upgrading the cabinet doors under the sink... with teak trim and teak finger pulls...

Thanks everyone -- great suggestions. I've bookmarked this thread (like so many others) and will let you know how the curtains turn out!

Thanks Joel! I know Beacon Marine well -- right next to my mechanic. I keep Tortuga just down the street at Anchor's Way boatyard.

Are you a Ventura local or just passing through? Where is Chester?

Matt

I spend the winters in Camarillo....and the summers in Chester...I hate the snow.... keep the boat beside my house...it.s much nicer than the dog house...(which I am in most of the time)
