hi........ used boat, used radio, bought a handheld portable radio, I have not got a MMSI number for the portable yet. I would like to know what the mmsi number is on my Standard Horizon Eclipse DSC+ GX1150 is.
The person I bought the boat from wasn't getting another boat, so I might use that number.

lost and confused

If this is a Canadian Registered boat you would have to apply for a MMSI number from Industry Canada. If it doesn't have an MMSI number installed then it should accept it. If it does have an MMSI installed then you would have to send it to the radio manufacturer to have the number changed to the new number.

you should be able to download a manual for the radio from the Standard Horizon website.

The manual will tell you how to check for the MMSI#.

You cannot change the MMSI # in a Standard Horizon radio. The radio has to be sent back to the factory. You will have to contact Industry Canada to see if you can transfer the MMSI number which is in the radio--if there is one. If it is a US issued MMSI number you will not be able to use the old number on a Canadian vessel.

95% of radios do not have the MMSI # entered, and thus the DSC will not work.

To find the MMSI number in a Standard Horizon: Press the "Call/Menu button, and scroll down to MMSI on the menu by using channel up or down.--if entered it should be right there. in the display as you hit "enter" from soft key.

Does your hand held accept MMSI? Does it have GPS and DSC? If so, then you can enter the number.. But be sure it is valid, since again, most radios will not accept a second MMSI # without being sent to the factory.

I can't speak to the American experience, but here in Canada, I do not know why anyone would ever return a radio to get an MMSI removed simply so they can put a new one in. It is so easy to simply transfer the MMSI in the radio to the new owner of the vessel. When I sold my previous boat, I explained to the new owner how to do it. He did it and it's done. All done online. Couldn't be easier. The number that was mine is now his. I bought a new radio when I got my new [to me] boat. Got a fresh MMSI, no cost, of course, and that's now my number. So simple.

I have been told that it is not all that difficult to hack a radio, so you can install a new number, and there are some technicians who can even do so legally. On the 1-10 scale of illegal things I suspect this might rate a 0.5

I had also seen this procedure on the web. When you send the radio back, the company doesn't pull the radio apart and replace a circuit board or something. The procedure was something like "hold down call and WX until the unit beeps" and the old MMSI was erased. Kind of a scam to pay postage to send it back and be without a radio until it is returned. Makes you think about just updating your radio. Hey, maybe that's the point?

Always the skeptic,

Found this

Thought this might be of interest as I needed to change the MMSI number on my navman 7100,

Turn radio off.
Press and hold "scan" and "esc" while turning radio on.
Enter pin: -
7 enter
1 enter
0 enter
0 enter
Follow menu to clear MMSI and/or ATIS. When done, turn off and on radio, and follow menu to enter MMSI again

and yes it works
NOTE If 7100 does not work try 1688

Generally Standard Horizon/Vertex/Yaesu products require software and a special cable to change the coding. I have the cable and software for my ham radio by Yaesu but I have never seen it for the Standard Horizon 1700.

If someone actually knows what the "secret code" is I am sure it would be appreciated by many. But I have looked on a number of ham sites, where hacking is discussed--and could not find any code...

Icom allows two attempts at input of the MMSI--so it is possible to put in a new MMSI--but Standard Horizon only allows one attempt.

Once Leon gets the code it appears that Industry Canada will allow him to use that same number. (See my first post about getting the current MMSI)

With your help I figured out that a mmsi number has not been installed...:)
No resetting needed, sent away for my own MMSI number.
Hopefully I will be up and running in a week

And just to be clear your panic button will work with out a Mmsi. It just will not have as much info but your location will be broadcast.

Just for the sake of completeness, the DSC distress signal will only contain GPS coordinates if the radio has a built in GPS to get them or, if it doesn't, the radio is wired to another device (typically a chart plotter) that can provide it with GPS coordinates.

I have read that a great many boaters never bother to connect their plotters to their VHF radios and thus will not send GPS coordinates in the event of a DSC distress call. This likely prompted the addition of internal GPS receivers built into the VHF radios.

You are right about that. The majority of boats never turn on their vhf or think its a cell phone.

In another facebook cruising forum a boater with large yacht ( 50 plus) stated that he has radar so other boats can see him???? I am often amazed at how little people understand their own equipment.

I talked to a guy that had AIS so everyone could see him. It was receive only and he did not know that . I dont think half the people selling this stuff ( westmarine, cabelas, etc staff as example.) know how it works.

My vhf stays on and is hooked to my chart plotter but I have not dealt with the MMSI issue yet.

So Boat us wants 25 bucks to get a number now if you are not a member and 24 to become a member. I just when to the US power boat squadron website and got a number for free. sea tow give free numbers but something is wrong with their site at today. I will be putting 338233368 in my vhf right now in case any of you want to call me.

FYI, MMSI numbers not issued via a US FCC application will work in your radio, (BoatUS, Power Squadron, Sea Tow etc), but You will not be listed in the FCC international data base, which means that if you are in Canada, the standard DSC info will be broadcast, GPS Lat and Long, BUT they, Canada Coast Guard, will not be able to identify you or get your boat information to know anything more about you than your location.
