C-Ranger R25 tug - In the water

I also like the blue trim...it kinda ties it all together...

My question for the New Hampshire Guy (Dealer) is what motor do you have in the 21 to get 12.5 ??? that sounds really good.... I can't go that fast with my 22' tug and I have a 30 hp Yanmar...

I am anxious to hear what top speed the 25 gets...it is totally kool.(keen etc.)

OK Joe - check it out now. If I make too many more changes for you, I will have to put Sea Wolf on it, then it will be your boat and Pat & Patty  may put out a hit us for stealing :crook their boat. :smiled

Joel,
The R21-EC has the 30HP Yanmar. I had it wide open at 3400 RPMs and flat water and the GPS had a pretty steady 12.5. 3000 RPMs were 9.5-10MPH. The boat/engine doesn't have 20 hrs on it and the bottom is clean as a whistle. Don't know if that is a factor. We're going to apply a Bottom paint replacing wax that is very slick and see if we get anything more on the speed. The boat is great.
As far as the Mast on the 25TUG, it looks like the same as the one on the R21-EC. It really is somewhat cosmetic with the masthead all around light on top and a place for a flag/pennant halyard. The nice thing is it has a quick disconnect shackle on the running gear and the mast folds over (sideways) on hinges to reduce the bridge/ trailer clearance. I know everyone wants a sturdy structure, but maybe something in between that is strong enough for radar but still light enough to fold over might be what people really want. Just a thought.
More to follow.

Dave- Don't you dare do that!!! I'm in the S-House Grade III already with Pat and Patty and any more agrivation and they'll set the building on fire!!!

(Thanks for the changes! Lookin' good!!!)

Since we have one of these babies on order, I’ll throw in my two cents regarding “the look” of the prototype. I find myself in the strange position of agreeing with most of the comments made Re:

1) The brow visors definitely need to be colored as shown in oldgrowth’s Photoshop – gel coat, not paint would be the best of course. Blue looks good with the blue hull, red with a blue hull would be sharp as well
2) The mast as shown looks……petite. It seems out of scale with the rest of the boat. It needs to have larger DIA tubing as Sea Wolf mentioned. A structural mast (with or without an integral exhaust) would be great, but I don’t see that happening at this stage in the design/build process.
3) Port holes – I don’t mind giving up the aft one in the cabin, but the R25 cries out for the one in the V-berth area. Hopefully that was just something they hadn’t gotten around to installing on the prototype boat that will make it into production. As for the Port holes themselves, I’d like to see them about an inch larger in DIA if possible. They look a bit dwarfed by the LARGE windows. Don’t get me wrong, large windows = good (better visibility and ventilation). I’m just referring to the impact on the overall appearance. It doesn’t help appearance-wise that the windows shown on the R25 have a thick black frame/seal that makes them appear even larger. Maybe a window that wasn’t quite as tall (about 2” shorter) with a white frame as seen on some of the smaller Nordic Tugs would help minimize their size visually.
4) One other thing I noticed in Sea Wolf’s side-by-side comparison pics, that rogerbum also pointed out, is the change to the bow rail. Not only does in not extend as far aft on the prototype, but it’s about 6” taller (more practical?), and doesn’t have the subtle drop (gets lower) as it runs aft that is shown on the rendering of the concept. Again, another long, low horizontal visual line that was lost that would help overall appearance, IMHO.
5) Smoke stack – A dry stack is fine with me, just don’t make it look like the one on the prototype. ;-) I’m sure they won’t, that looks like a last minute afterthought to me.

As FaC-Dory Guy says, with a few tweaks, the R25 is going to be a real looker. I’m glad the Ranger factory is actively seeking input. On a side note, Jeff, is there any performance data you can release on the power requirements at various speeds and loads for the R25?

I used photoshop to change the colors to as close to cabernet as I could. Unfortunately I don't have a way to upload it :( So Pat, if you want it send me your email addy (I seem to have lost it)

Can someone put that boat pic inside a bathtub? Almost looks like a toy boat except for the people on the far shore. Cute little sucker.

David-

That was kinda my reaction, although I thought it would be a great parade around the harbor toy tub when I first saw the C-Ranger 21 at Ballena Bay in Alamda (Bay Area) a few years ago! But according to Dusty, it's a real seaworthy tank on the water, so the 25 ought to be a wave-busting bulldozer as well!

Where is RedFox when you need some quality welding. I extended the side rail but had a hard time neatly hooking them together.
Looks good oldgrowth. Yes, a nice smooth sloop as shown on the rendering is what you'd want. And that V-berth port hole, of course. What do you think of the idea of using white frames on the windows to minimize their size visually? I assume that would be powder coated aluminum.

that V-berth port hole, of course.
I added it back. Didn’t know that I had accidentally left it off. Too many layers on my photos and hid the wrong one.

I think you are right about the windows. I will work on them, but may be a few days.

I didn't mean to imply that you should add that to your image. I just wanted to know what you thought of the frames in white. I know that stuff takes time - I don't want to make work for you. You did a great job cleaning up the original and adding the mods. It really helps to visualize the final product.

I had intended on keeping the v-berth port hole, just didn’t notice it was missing until I read your post. I think the boat looks better with it. I do this just to have something to do at night. I am not a TV fan so this gives me something to do.

Regarding the down=folding radar support.... I think a tripod arrangement with two long side supports in the 'shrouds' position, with a shorter, removable, aft post near or on the stack, would allow the support to fold aft, clearing the stack and allowing a large radar dome to rest in a cradle, upon the lower aft cabin roof. I suppose it could be made for fold forward also, but would have to be taller. What you could do to minimize radar interference is to have the large tube tripod support a platform on top of the apex then have the smaller tubing support the gps and anchor lite .... like an antenna on a three legged stool.

Re: name..... we were thinking of a TomCat a few years ago and were thinking something like "Tomahawk", or ""Three C's" to honor my three C-named sons, but the C-Ranger is a totally different feel of a boat, so back to square one.

I thought of a good analogy about these boats... It's kind of like what dog you have or like: There are sleek, fast greyhounds - a TC255, Setters- a CD 22, A big lab - a CD 25, Chiua uas (sp) - a CD16, and the C-Ranger - somewhere between a Basset hound and a Stocky British Bulldog...

Well, keep on posting.... this is fun! John

Another thought about the radar support - you could use the fake or real metal exhaust tube coming out of the stack as the aft support for the two pipes in the shroud postitions. Then either have the fake stack detatch, allowing aft foldback of the dome, or the real stack with a short, detachable extension allow the aft folback of the dome. John

Reading this post reminds me of our first experience on the CD25 at the 2005 SBS. Since the boat wasn't done it just felt like something was missing and unfortunately nobody was around to tell us that. We dismissed the boat for the next two days and considered everything else in the show that met our criteria. It wasn't until we took one last look at the boat and Rich told us the boat wasn't done yet that we knew we loved the boat . . . and we do. No buyer's remorse here!

The first look at the C-Ranger 25 picture left me with the same feeling. "Hmmm, it's missing something." Well, it's a work in progress and I know it's going to look great when it's done. It is great that the Factory is willing to read our comments becuase they have made some great improvements to the C Dory as we've talked like this on the site.

Can't wait to see one in person.

Dee

I coulden't see...Does it have an opening front window? I have one on my tug and of course on the C-Dory....it really needs that ventilation...especially on a hot day.
