C-Dory Sightings

Saw C-Dragon as I was leaving St. Helens today - got a wave out of them. Also another C-Dory heading toward Astoria on the east side of Sand Island - tried to get a closer look but she was going fast and may be past Bouy 10 by now.

Took a friend to see the Ballard Locks today. Happened to see the blue-trimmed Isabel on it's maiden voyage into the salt. What a beautiful cruiser. It has high roof, all the bells and whistles including stainlesss railings in the cockpit, a Honda 130hp with a 15hp kicker and a squaredaway crew of 4. I shouted a good word about C-Brats and the cap'n said he has been lurking on the site for some time.

Just talked with my Uncles Bob & Paul (who were on our 22 cdory last weekend - see last pages of photo album) via phone this Sunday evening. They are camping out near the Canadian border and plan to cross tomorrow morning to visit Victoria and other places. All goes well during the convo but lo and behold they call me back about 30 minutes later with Dick & June - owners of a cdory called Shrek I believe. They live in BC and frequent the San Juans. They hope to get to a cdory gathering. Look forward to meeting them! These cdory folks are all over the place!

Later,

Had our new Sue-C out this weekend from portland down multnomah channel to sand island. Didn't see another C-Dory the first half of the weekend. Then returning sunday afternoon at Kelly Point we see two, a grey and a red. The grey looked like the brand new one that has just joined us. What a nice weekend of weather. We were going to go down to Cathlamet saturday around 11 but got as far as Kalama and the chop was blowing up the river and we said the heck with it, back to windy city (sand island) and catch up on our reading.

Hey Mac,

Thanks for the reply. Funny you should ask...Amy flies out to Dallas on business Tuesday morning and returns Thursday night. Been working on her to go this weekend. We're not sure on our plans yet but if we go we am pondering an early departure Saturday morning then leaving Sunday afternoon some time. (I know...we're nuts!)

Where can we go boating out of Sequim? (Thinking we could go out and buzz the coastline or around the corner to Port Townsend?)

Can we spend the night on our boat in the harbor?

Where is everyone getting together?

I've read through some of the information regarding the Sequim gathering but any info about the harbor, launch and facilities would be greatly appreciated from anyone.

Thanks all,

Crazy Frazey comin' at ya' live! :smiled

Quite a pull - but that's what you get living so far from here!

Let's see - quickest is to trailer to Sequim, and launch at John Wayne Marina - then motor a very short way south down the bay to the State Park where we will be. I know a couple people are doing that...

There is a dock at the State Park, no power. First come, first serve (no reservations) and often we raft if there are too many of us. Plus there some mooring floats. Yep, you can sleep on board. Hope your Wallas is working - it gets pretty cool at night.

Last year we motored to Victoria on Saturday - but I don't know what's in store this year.Saturday evening we will all be at the campfire at the park.

Port Townsend is around the corner - I don't remember how far, but I'd guess 15-20 nautical miles. Wind, and the Fxx word can be factors. Dungeness Spit, and other places are probably worth a cruise. Other Brats would know better than I - I've only been there once - last year.

See you?
Mac

Thanks Mac for the information...very helpful! Used the Wallas 1.5 weeks ago and it was working well. Hope to be there if we can.

Later,

John

Saw a Blue 22 Cruiser heading south on Rt. 23 between Ann Arbor, Michigan and Dundee, Michigan on Saturday, October 8. Meant to post earlier, but couldn't find the thread. Boat was named Sweet Pea.

Salty-Dog,

You were in my neighborhood. I live just north of Ann Arbor and take US-23 on my way to Lake Erie. I have not seen a blue boat named Sweet Pea in all of my travels. In fact, I last fished Lake Erie on October 6. On October 8 I was in Traverse city, Michigan. On my way home I stopped outside of Cadillac, MI for gas and while I was filling up Not For Hire, a 22 ft Blue Cruiser, pulled in along side of me. Though we frequent many of the same spots, we had not crossed paths until this time. Take care maybe we will cross lines next year on Lake Erie.

Best regards,
Rollie/C-Batical

So wensday afternoon I am in everret pouring concrete for a new gas station. The Forman just rejected the load and that means I have to make a run to monroe to get rid of it and then drive back to mill creek to wash and park the truck, during rush hour. I was hoping to get off in time to set crab pots that night. As I turn around to get in the truck what do I see at the stop light in front of me? You got it a blue 22 angler with downriggers, poles and traps on board. Water was still running off the trailer. Someone really knows how to hurt a guy. I got off work at 8:30 that night.

Saw "nine inches" at Newport yesterday getting ready to do some crabbing. Neat little boat and good folks as would be expected from fellow C-Dory owners.

I'm curious (and puzzled): Friday, October 21, while zipping along traveling East on Interstate 80 in Nebraska, I met a semi-load of three C Dorys traveling West. I think there were two 22s and one 16, all trimmed in green and appeared to be brand spanking new. It was fun to see, but I'm puzzled. If it's a factory delivery from Washington for delivery to ??? out west, why on I 80 in Nebraska heading West? They'd be coming from the other direction. Hmmmm. Is there a new dealer springing up somewhere in the midwest (Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado) that we haven't heard about yet? Gots to know these things!

I saw these guys in early September, at Kaktovik (Barter Island) Alaska.

Sad to see the toll that weather and neglect had on them.

Well, heck. I can't get the photo to show up. Look at my photo album. Pic 5.

Funny you should mention three new green C-Dorys. Looked like two 22s and one 16 to us, too. Only thing is that this transport was headed south on I-5 near Rice Hill (just north of Roseburg, OR) on October 15, a Saturday evening about 6PM. We were northbound on I-5 & close to the last few hundred miles of a 3800 mile trip which had taken us through several states. These three C-Dorys were the first we'd seen on the entire trip. Couldn't help but notice them. We figured they were headed to a dealership in California. Maybe not...if they're the same transport you saw in Nebraska????

This last weekend was the Downrigging Weekend at Chestertown on the Chesapeake. It was a gathering of tall ships and work boats from the area, one last fling before "downrigging" or putting away for the season. My sister Roz was able to go out on the Mildred Bell which is a Buy Boat that is owned by the Living Classroom group out of Maryland. She saw some wonderful old boats, but also many C-Dorys. She attended the Eastern Shore gathering with me last June and was excited to see some boats that she could put faces to, one being Tom and Ann's dory, Sally's Sister. She also saw Adoryble and Lizzie Ann plus other that she couldn't see the names on. I put some of Roz's photos in my album. She had a wonderful time, and wants to return to the Eastern Shore gathering this year. Maybe I will have to go too! It was a great time. Robbi

Yesterday I took out C-Ak for a short cruise about out of Auke Bay. It was a beautiful clear day, not a cloud anywhere and just above feezing. I stayed pretty much in protected waters where it was nice and calm with only a brief introduction to the seas that were more exposed and quite big and nasty :disgust  . Saw four other boats out in the same areas, two were Seasports and the fourth was another C-dory. It was a 22 classic called C-Biscuit (a different one that the already C-brat member). Saw him back at the harbor where we had a short chat and I introduced him to C-Brats so he will hopefully look us up online.

We are about to finish up building our new home near Auke Bay and will pull C-AK out of the water and park her at home for a while to work on a few things. There will be 3 C-Dorys within a hundred feet of each other as it seems most of the neighbors have one.

Wow, awesome pics from Kaktovik. I love the workboat look of the Classics. Do you have any more pictures of these boats?
Just one - same view, just zoomed out. Added to my photo album. The weather has not been kind to those boats. The interiors are pretty much rotted, except for where they have been gutted.

I wish i had known that your sister was coming...the downrigging was wonderful, and a real event and C.Dory was well represented. When i learn how to put pictures on this /#^*!)## machine i'll post some.
You have to do a return for the gathering in June..no excuses.
