I always called it the VW camper van of boats.

Or the SUV of boats. To me, it's a boat that can do a lot of different things. On this site, we see people using their C-Dory for day cruising, overnighters, extended cruises, fishing, boater homing and even in some rare cases, living aboard (e.g. Bill and El). There's very few other boats being used for as broad a range of uses as a C-Dory. So Swiss Army knife, VW Camper Van, Jeep, SUV - all of those analogies work well for me.

Based on my decade+ here I'd call it the vocal laxative of boats.

i always saw it as the jeep of the water. go anywhere, do anything.
