C-dory 16 motor choices

Hi Les I was refurring to the mercury family of engines they use a 1.7 block to get 75-115 non super charged and supercharged 135-200hp I was not familiar with the honda 40-50 family I have never had a honda before. I agree some times its better to get the smaller hp engione like you did with your honda 115 detuned 135-150 honda that 2.4 litre is the biggest bang for the buck .Suzuki used to sell their 90hp which was a 1.9-2.0 litre engine same as the 115 hp.which at the time was the biggest 90 hp Now Suzuki uses a 1.6 litre to get the 70-80-90hp engine family
So back to the 40hp story I think it has plenty of getup and go especially here in florida

Why haven't they re-rated the hull? With newer engines weighing somewhat less than their older siblings. Seem to me the hull would be rated for a larger engine.

Or is this is a displacement hull thing? Where there is a point of diminishing returns due to design and max hull speed?

Definitely not displacement hull thing. Displacement hulls are limited in speed regardless of horsepower once the hull speed is reached.

The main thing with these planing hulls is that there's a limit to the speed at which the boat can be safely operated. Once you get into the upper 20's/low 30's in MPH in these boats (TomCat excluded), the relatively flat hull get's very "squirrely" - e.g. hard to handle. So the manufacturers tend to rate the hulls for a HP level that's sensible for the boat's handling capabilities at speed.

Keep in mind the 16 was designed for the Johnson 40, which weighed considerable less than the current crop of four stroke 40's on the market.

The one argument for going to the 50 would be better hole shot, as the four stroke gives up torque to the two stroke (power stroke every other revolution as opposed to every revolution).

But this is where a knowledgable dealer comes in- Les knows his Hondas, and if the torque of the 40 comes in at a lower RPM, it will feel like a snappier engine on the 16.

If we had money, we could rig two boats, one with the forty, one with the fifty, put blank cowls on them and see if operators can tell whih motor is which.

Since we don't have money, we should listen to the guys that know what they're doing- although in the end, it is the customer's money, and we'll do what they want (within reason).

Don't get me started on 9.9 versus 15 kickers.....

Matt,

I'll bet the Johnson 40HP 2-Stroke really performed well on the CD 16 Cruiser. Our CD16 Cruiser was very stern heavy, because the Suzuki DF40 weighed approx. 230 pounds, and add to that a 50 pound kicker and the weight of the fuel and battery. She was very sensitive to stern weight, and if we got out of trim, it was very slow to bring the boat on plane.

In my third year, I took the 50 pound kicker off of the transom, and placed a 20 pound electric trolling motor in its place. What an unbelievable discernible effect that had on performance and fuel economy. Further, I looked through the power curve for the Suzuki DF40 for my model, and it appears to be the same for the DF50.

So what Les and you are trying to tell us is that it is all about torque and overall weight of the boat -- particularly on the stern. I stand corrected in that the 2006 CD 16 Cruiser probably would not have benefitted from the extra horsepower and that the 40 HP was the right engine. Perhaps boaters like me were trying to get too much out of a little boat in which case it was time to upgrade to a larger boat, which we did.

Thanks!

Rich

I would like to see a TV show with Les, Matt, and Marc. Sort of a "This Old Boat" or "Boat Talk". These guys know everything, and an hour with them would be entertaining and educational. (I already have Les's autograph)

More like "These Old Guys".

Or "Ho, Merc, and Suzi the Outboard brothers." :)

[Well I speak for Marc and I, Matt may be younger!]

If we're dumb enough to still be in the boat business you don't want to ask us any serious questions.

Oh, come on, get started - I'd like to hear your opinions (did I miss those on another thread?), especially regarding their use on... oh, say: a CD-25.

Should I start another thread?

Best wishes,
Jim
