C-Brat Kid Makes National News

I just have to share the terrific news we got today regarding our daughter, Amy.
She was selected by the National Science Foundation as the Outstanding Science Teacher for 2009 for the state of Utah. She won $10,000 and an expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to have dinner with the President. There was one science teacher selected from each of the 50 states. She has taught chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science for 14 years. She's really hoping that this will provide some opportunities, as she recently had to move for family reasons and has not found another teaching position--sign of the times. As those of you who know us can tell, she absolutely takes after her father in the smarts department, but she has my charming personality! The proud mom had to share the news with our C-Brat friends.

Patty here. That is fantastic, and you should absolutely pop your buttons! As an educator I can appreciate how competitive that honor was, and isn't it just typical that Amy is looking for a job when I can assure you there are many who have teaching positions who clearly shouldn't. If this honor doesn't put her at the top of the candidate list, what will? Congratulations!

Great news. Not only is she a top teacher, she's a top science teacher which (I my mind) makes her extra special. Congrats to her and to both of you for raising such a good person.

That's absolutely wonderful.

Teachers have the most influence on younger people than anyone else outside the family. I remember the teachers I had in high school (Mr. Hannigan, Mrs Shaw, Prof. Richardson, etc.) and what they did for me. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until much later, so here's my chance to congratulate your daughter in honor of all the other teachers.

The USA doesn't always appreciate this and I'm thrilled that your daughter got her much deserved award for her efforts. Please give her my congratulations. I hope she gets the best teaching job ever.

Congrats from all of us Miss Dixie on being the proud Mother and Dad of such a talented lady. For someone who could have used a much better understanding of math but never got much encourgement in my little country school system I am very pleased to see someone is making a difference for future rural kids.

Who would have thought that 2 + 2 would equal so much pride.

Congratulations--I assume that this is the daughter we met last summer: charming lady! Good luck on her finding a job--she should be in teacher motivation!

Congratulations.

Ask her some day if she has used Monarch Butterfly life cycle as an in room project. My father "wrote the book" as he was a science teacher and professor of education at U of Delaware. A retired teacher who baby sat for our kids about 10 years after my dad died made the connection one day.

I see a pattern here. C-Brats are smarter than the average bear, thus their offspring are even smarter than that. You go girl.

Brent & Dixie,

Please add me to the growing list of well-wishers!

Quite an honor indeed.

...and you have every right to be Proud!

Best,
Casey

Well, that is just SO great! :thup :thup :thup Tell Amy that Jim and Joan send our congrats and best wishes her way. You have plenty to be proud of with the two fine women that you two have raised.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan

Brent and Dixie, Congratulations, you have every right to be proud. And tell Amy to get the president to autograph her resume, and her teachers certificate. Should be worth a bump to the top in any application stack.
