Busted Latch Advice

Dear Brats,

My rear door latch that catches on the stop to hold the door open has a stripped screw, so it just flops around. A larger screw won't fit the countersink. Drilling all the way through and bolting can't be done because of the glass.

Looking for suggestions/recommendations. Looks like a stainless L type latch screwed into powder coated aluminum door frame. Some kind of super adhesive?

Please advise.

Bob Cat,
J.B. Weld or Marine Tex come to mind first of all. Fill hole and pre drill a new pilot hole the proper size.

I am sure someone with the same latch may have a better idea, but just in case you don't hear one, both of the above materials work wonders around a boat.

Good Luck

Hi, Bob

Welcome to the club. Our new TC255 door latch was stripped out shortly after arriving home from the factory. I have retightened it a few times, but its loose the next time it hits the door catch/stop. Haven't found a fix yet, but can sympathize with you. Don't know if their installing the same thing on the current production TC255's or not.

I have had this type of problem in the past with other hardware. There are two "perment" ways to go. One is to fill with JB weld and retap, set the screw in with a little more JB weld. Then mold the excess around the screw head. The other is to fill with JB, and then put a little 4200 or 5200 around the screw as you put it back in. The 4200 is more likely to allow you to back the screw out if you must. However I have successfully used the unbond for 5200.
