Boat survey 25' C-Dory

Hi,
I'm going to have a professional boat survey done on a new '07 25' C-Dory and would like some suggestions of some things to have him look at. I know to tell him to check for moisture under the v berth, I think there is a hatch or two for easy inspection.
Is there anything else?
I'm not crazy about the hatches to the cockpit bilge leaking, and I don't know how to remedy that. Has anyone fixed this problem.
Thanks.
Ken

Hi Ken,

I don't have any specific information for your surveyor but if you look at Sea Skipper's album you'll see how Hank modified his hatches so they wouldn't leak.

Keep in mind that there are some good surveyors, and some who just do "insurance/value surveys". I don't have time to send a private post this PM (limited access), but will attempt to do a post in the next day or so, when I have more time and access. But basically all holes in cored materials need to be sealed with epoxy and rebedded. There should be no screws into the top layer of the bottom boat (cored with balsa), yet all of the boats have this.

I did Hanks modification on my 2006 CD 2006, worked the gaskets over etc. and the cockpit hatches are still a sieve. The only way you will keep the bilge dry is to keep the cockpit covered, its just a poor design, but it is my one and only gripe about an otherwise wonderful boat.

There are hatches you can buy which will not leak. Unfortunately they are not the same size, and are expensive. Is it worth it? I didn't think so when I put a new cockpit floor in the 25 I owned--but something to consider. For example Freeman Marine hatches, or Baier in aluminum are the ones I would have considered. They are waterproof.
