Greetings -

I'm looking seriously at a C-Dory 22 cruiser and am interested to know if anyone has experience with a boat share. I'm itchin' to get out on the water, but I travel for business quite a bit and won't be able to use a boat more than once or twice a month. I like the idea of sharing expenses and upkeep responsibilities and that the boat won't sit unused the majority of the time.

I have friends who have done this with a sailboat, and it's worked well.

Any thoughts from those that have done this? Caveats?

I have seen successful partnerships on boat ownership, I have also seen friendships destroyed by it.

I think thge key is to have a very well written agreement that spells out how costs are divided, who pays for damage the cause, things like that.

Another possibility is a dealer or charter operator offering fractional ownership.

Les Lampman did a pitch on that on the EQ marine website a while back and at least one charter company in Anacortes does it.

I have had two successful boat partnerships. You do have to spell out very carefully and formally an agreement on maintance, cost, how the boat is left (clean with full fuel tanks). The biggest issue was disolution of the partnership. In one I bought out the other partner, and then sold the boat myself. A little loss on that one. The other my partner didn't seem to think I was serious, until I was about to sell my partnership to some one who wanted to keep the boat 90 miles away, 50% of the time. at that point my partner bought me out.
