Bilge Pump and hose install

Going to install a new bilge pump (Johnson ultima 1250 and new bilge hose)
Have a couple questions.

1 - The old Rule 1100 strainer was either epoxied or 5200? was used to attach to hull. No screws. Dont wanna screw and instructions call for a 1/2" backing plate then screw in to backing plate. Can't I just use some good marine grade caulk (4200, 5200 or Boatlife?) to attach the strainer to hull like the factory did?

2 - Where can I buy shield series 162 potable water hose (1-1/8" I.D) by the foot. Have looked everywhere and they seem to sell in only 50' lengths. West Marine only carries up to 1" and if ordered they need to buy 50' as well so I was told.

Boat Like Life caulk-- is best for plastics, but it may not have enough adhesive power. You can use the 3 M urethanes, in the 4000 and 4200 series. I have used 4200 with no problems.

Are your stuck on using a clear food grade hose? Cabelas has Premium Bilge/Livewell Hose: (Mr Cabelas died in the last couple of days).

"This hose is designed for critical livewell or bilge applications. Smooth-walled vinyl hose can be connected above or below water line. Smooth design increases water flow and accepts tight bends.
Available: 3/4" Diameter, 1-1/8" Diameter, 1-1/2" Diameter.

NOTE: These hoses are sold by the foot. After you have selected the hose you would like then, in the configuration box select the number of feet you would like to purchase in the quantity box."

You might check local hardware and big box stores (Lowes/Home Depot)

Another option is using 1 1/4" hose which is available, and adapting down to the 1 1/8" output of the pump. There are several ways to adapt, including a plastic bushing, build up with heavy duty tape, and a high end clamp.
 
Thanks - Both connections (pump and discharge on side of boat are 1-1/8") From the research I have done alot of people favor the Shields 162 series hose for this type of install but will check out Cabelas.
 
Another option is the Shields 141 series "Multiflex". This is food grade, and is used mostly for water tank fills, but it would work fine for the bulge pump. It is sold by the foot by West Marine (pricey--but what about a boat isn't.
 
Not sure why you want "food grade" for pumping bilge water overboard through. I know it should be smooth wall. When I did mine, I got the hose from West Marine, (they had 2 versions) and the smooth walled one looked like it was corrugated but was not, and it was the right size. I cant remember 1 and a quarter or 1 and an eighth. It was a direct fit for my 1500gph Rule and the fitting on the boat.

The Shields 141 is smooth bore, with the external spiral plastic re-inforcement--that is why I suggested it--since there are several standard bilge hoses which are corrugated--and I picked up that you did not want the corrugated type.
 
Thanks guys - Will be installing a washdown pump soon as well. I can use the same type of hose as the bilge if I go with a different brand? Looks like Trident series 147 would be good for both the bilge and washdown pump?
 
I ended up going with this for both the bilge and washdown pump.

Trident Vac XHD Bilge / Live Well Hose
Smooth extra heavy wall vinyl (FDA) well hose. All clear (see thru) with black helix. Excellent durability, flexibility & bend radius for XHD bilge, live well, drain, scupper lines, etc. No cuffs required. Operating temperatures +10° to +140°F (-12° to +60°C).

The Shields 147 is a good choice, since you are using it for the wash down pump pick up, and it will be used below the water line--be sure and double clamp it.

What does that mean?

No clamps required? (Blasphemy!)

That is referring to the fact that some corrugated hose (think of vacuum cleaner style hose) uses cuffs to join sections. The cuffs have grooves on the inside and you sort of "screw" them onto the corresponding ridges on the hose. The type of hose that "doesn't require cuffs" is often a bit cheesy though (the sort of hard plastic hose that has flat sections where the cuffs would be), so I don't like to use it (either).
