Big oil wins another round

Dan-

The laws of Physics and Chemistry are vindicated again!

That's the REAL INCONVENIENT TRUTH, even though it isn't PC correct in some circles.

Solar power in the form of photovoltics or wind power appears to be the only power sources that don't involve greenhouse gases.

We have plenty of roof surface in this country that could be generating power every day. After the solar panels are installed, they work almost cost free for 10-20 years.

Many areas that don't have much sun do have wind so wind power could also help with providing renewable power.

I have heard that corn grown for ethanol uses more oil to produce than the energy provided by the ethanol.

It really doesn't matter here in Seattle whether biodiesel helps the environment or not. Using biodiesel allows one to have a biodiesel sticker on your car, letting everyone know how "green" you are. Kinda like Al Gore preaching from the comfort of his 10,000+ square foot home, or a private jet, about how you and I need to scale back. No coincidence that Gore is very much a hero here in Seattle. Ironically, George Bush's Crawford home is a relatively modest, extremely green structure. Hope that's not too inconvenient for y'all! Later, Mike.

My favorite quote from Rush Limbaugh was what he said about Willie Nelson.... something like "Why is it that whenever I think about Willie Nelson, I think of soap and hot water?"

Wind farms are grotesque. Go view the once beautiful desert hills and mountains as you approach Palm Springs, CA. Huge tracts of land are now off limits to all other uses, and ugly besides.

I like the idea of solar panels on roofs. And despite our getting 65" of rain annually (almost twice what Seattle gets) with all of those gray, cloudy days, the solar panel on my boat works reliably, is lightweight, is quiet and unobtrusive.

There is plenty of clean drinking water. There are plenty of oil reserves. There are plenty of fish.... and there is plenty of time to figure out what energy sources make the most sense for the future.....for a limited number of people.

The human population has been doubling every 20 years for some time. Until people are willing to control the birthrate, all of these problems related to finite resources will plague us exponentially. Disease and war are the only checks on the system at this point. They'll work. They do with any caged system.

A former student of mine, a young blond gal with a singing voice you couldn't believe, was recently arrested for helping her boyfriend steal a car. She'd already been arrested for methamphetamine.... and just gave birth to a child. Her fifth. All from different fathers I think. She had two while in high school. She's not married. How many of her children must we support?

And now the Government is going to send us all a big check in May. That girl too no doubt. And we pay for it all.

I'm going fishing when I can, while I can, in the best boat I can afford and am going to feel good about it. C.W.

Yes the wind farms aren't the prettiest to look at. There are other forms of energy producing -
How about wave technology? There is enough energy in the waves off the East coast that should someone plant 50 square miles of hydro powered wave generators we could supply the entire population of the US with zero eemmissionenergy. But you didn't see that on the front page did you?
How about that 100 mpg car? It's the myth that no one wants to admit is actually in production. But just not available to the United States. Why might you ask? Because our own government doesn't want us to have those choices. So they allow Toyota to import the PPriusand sell more hybrids on the case that they get the best mileage. Where do those batteries go when your done with them? And you still have to maintain your gas engine too.... :sad How about technology that is available now, WV currently has the Lupo - yes it's small - yes you can't pack a family of five in it. But for that average commuter or small family it would work, and yes it gets 100mpg. No, it doesn't go 180mph - but who needs to when your in the city stuck in traffic? :wink There are many forms of energy, there are other solutions to our energy crisis - but until someone can get through some of the major hurdles our own government puts in front of us we will continue to see these stories not placed in front of Joe public. :embarrased :cry

What I was talking about looks like a catipilar and doesn't require any sun - it uses the natural wave motion. No worries about guls and what not.

I knew a farmer who just wasn't making it farming. Eventually he sold some land to a developer who put in an upscale development. The lots were large and the views were magnificent. The farmer sent his kids off to college and bought a new tractor and a boat. One day he got an offer to lease a small tract to build a cell tower. If it was approved, it would ruin the view of all the development home owners. At the Planning Board meeting speaker after speaker spoke against the tower. Finally the farmer rose and said "I don't have a cell phone". Then he left.

And what are we going to do when the government limits us to 200 gallons of gasoline per year ???? Per licesed driver....???

Have more kids (baby C-Brats), give 'em licenses, then take each of their 200 gallons of annual fuel allotment, put the fuel in our C-Dorys and cruise happily into the sunset..... :wink

Could happen. No telling what they'll come up with to "save the planet." Of course, we can't drill a postage stamp piece of ANWR, can't drill the deep Gulf (even though Chevron found a field the size of Saudi's), can't drill off California, can't drill off Florida (although the Chinese are), can't build any refineries, can't build nukes (although they've powered France for years), and we can't use coal (even though we have a 250 year reserve of that alone).

Yep, I'd pretty much say we need gas rationing.

I recall reading recently our electric grid is powered by coal on the order of 80% of total production.  (Not a good thing IMHO). I got 2 bucks for Willie, also. Joel, can you say, "Moonshine"?                                              JT  :smiled

Having spent 34 years working for "Big Oil" you can understand how elated I was to come to the site after a brief absence and the first thing I notice is 451 posts to sort and whats on the top of the list "Big Oil Wins another Round. I say hurrah for Big Oil, I love it when were in the news and I would appreciate it if you would spill some on the ground next time you fill up!

Dan,

What do you do for a living? Oh I'm a guano removal engineer.

Isn't guano used for fertilizer? Could be a new small business opportunity,

Guano removal and fertilizer sales. :wink

CW,

Wind farms are grotesque. Go view the once beautiful desert hills and mountains as you approach Palm Springs, CA. Huge tracts of land are now off limits to all other uses, and ugly besides.

Yeh, they are uglier than the pure desert.

A coal mine and a coal fired powerplant are also ugly. Have you seen the power lines marching across the beautiful desert on their way to LA? How about the oil burning powerplants on the beaches of Ventura, LA, Orange and San Diego counties?

I was actually thinking of small scale wind power units on barns and outbuildings, to supplement solar panels.

The real solution is to improve energy efficiency to reduce consumption and generate power locally so we don't need all those mines, powerplants, and transmission towers.

Installing solar on a house is a good way. My son put an array on his house and now sells power back to the utility.

Larry,

I agree that every bit helps and with the wind at our house and hot summer sun, am also considering augmenting our power supplies, especially since we just committed to staying here for the long run. There is an awful lot of roof space that could be utilized on buildings across the globe. There are measures individuals and societies can take to become more efficient. Early comments in this thread referred to the laws of physics and the laws of chemistry ( I minored in Chem.) being upheld. I couldn't help throwing in some comments regarding the laws of biology and overpopulation, which directly ties in with reducing consumption.

I believe in the quality of life, not quantity. Wave generation too has potential.... potential to also cover up our coastlines with more massive off-limits areas to boaters and fishermen. They are considering it here off of the Oregon coast. I enjoy power, I enjoy paper & wood and I know that dams are built (or nuclear towers, or coal plants) and trees must be cut to furnish these things I appreciate. But as numbers of people grow, they must ultimately be concentrated in high numbers (for efficiency) and more and more land must be converted to food and energy production. The wild places and freedom to experience them are the first to go. I took this pic last summer of a ship taking some blades upstream for the massive new wind farm in NE Oregon. C.W.

Mike

Understand your sentiment completely.

But I have finally given up. If they want to starve themselves of energy, the very thing that makes up our civilization and freedoms, so be it -- I'm sick of fighting.

I don't know if any of you have seen my films or not, but I have flown the entire nation many times.

Take a look at the vastness of our land (if you care to expand your mind):

While I was sleeping, there was a generational choice made, that we would worship the earth, and that we would deprive ourselves and our children of the very things that made our civilization possible: oil, and products made from oil. Even though it has been proven that there are vast untapped sources of oil, we will turn away and create an artificial shortage.

So be it. Out of my hands. It has been decided.

In this film:

I pointed out that the entire world population could fit inside the state of Montana with room left over. I doubt anyone is listening or will care, much to important to "save the planet" while sacrificing the humans, and all the usual hoopla.

Peace be with you all.

Dan,

You've done it again  ! I sure hope you have that stirrin stick outside so it is frozen real hard and doesn't stink up the house. This subject is always amusing to watch/listen to cuz it sure polarizes a lot of folk.

To all...............just buy the stuff and enjoy cruising our C-Dorys!

DaveS,

Good idea for creating more fuel allocations, but there are some of us out here that "might" have trouble accomplishing that feat. You know it does take cooperation..........among other things!
