Big Blow On Lake Superior

The first big blizzard of the season is moving out of the Great Plains today and out over Lake Superior. I looked at the NOAA marine forecast for the lake last night and it predicted, in some portions, winds to 55 knots and waves 17-22 feet! I recall reading about one of the last radio transmissions made by the well-seasoned captain of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald back in 1975. He said, "I've never seen anything like it." One can only imagine. That was the storm that also blew out the windows on the north shore's Battle Island Lighthouse, 130' above the lake and ripped 5000 gallon diesel tanks off their cradles. Superior is truly an inland sea.

We cruised the Apostles a while back and have to admit we were a little intimidated by Lake Superior. Even in summer it can get rough real quick and in the unlikely event that we wound up in the water hypothermia probably wouldn't take long. We were watching weather closely. You have an area with beautiful scenery and crystal clear water.
