And the Yamaha is looking better than ever! We are still sticking with the Suzuki.

New Yamaha F2.5 clean-burning features include a new intake manifold, new combustion chamber design, a four-degree cylinder offset, an enlarged water jacket for more consistent engine temperature control and a two-stage exhaust gas recirculation system.
The new Yamaha F2.5 is easier to carry. Its new ergonomic carrying handle can also be used for assistance in steering when in reverse. In addition, boaters can store the F2.5 virtually anywhere. A new oil leak prevention system allows the outboard to lie flat on one of three sides or it can be stored vertically.
Yamaha’s unique decompression system makes the new F2.5 easy to start, while even more convenient operation results from F-N shift and 360-degree steering for reverse.
The new portable also has smoother, crisper throttle operation, thanks to a unique two-cable control system.
The updated F2.5 portable sports a modern, sleek look courtesy of a new cowling and split-bottom pan.

Suzuki 2.5 now comes in a long shaft. I bought a short shaft several years ago and am still happy. I can get it to plane my 8' aluminum kicker by using a throttle extension and sitting on the middle seat. I mainly use it on a day sailor, but have put in on my CD 16 while running sea trials with my Yamaha F50. I took the F50 wiring and motor completely off the boat this winter, so I wanted a backup kicker in case I didn't get things back together correctly. I haven't decided whether I really need it as a permanent backup.
The 2.5 will push the 16 at hull speed (about 4 mph) in calm conditions. I haven't tried it in chop and wind and wouldn't expect much of it. In nasty conditions it would work best to use it to turn and run somewhere to wait out the weather.
One thing to watch for on the 2.5 is making sure that your gas is really clean. The jet on the carb is so small that a knat's eybrow will clog it up. Very frustrating when the engine runs fine at all speeds except idle. That's the speed I use for trolling in my kicker. I followed the instructions on another website to disassemble and clean the jet. That fixed it. I have since bought a special filter funnel for using when filling the tank. Good thing I only have to do that a couple times a year.
I have some pictures in my album of how the 2.5 sits compared to the CD 16's bottom. A long shaft isn't really required on the 16 and would be worse for my other uses.

I called Westside Marine (Yamaha dealer in Port Townsend, WA) He has 4 of the new Yami 2.5's on order. Expect them the end of March. He asked what I was particularly interested in about the "New 2.5" When I read the stuff from the add off, he said, "the older ones had all the same so what's the big deal?"
I didn't have a good answer, just curious to see one live.
