Best Dog Names

OK, I will admit it. Bad case of cabin fever here in Oregon.

After DaNag so eloquently gave Salty the new name of Hippy Hound, that got me thinking about dog names. What are the best that you have heard? Here's a couple that I like...

1) A drathaar named "Deets" after the character Josh Deets in Lonesome Dove.
2) My neighbor's big burley black lab named "Tred" after Tred Barta the TV turkey

Two of my faves:

Chim Chim. I was a Speed Racer fan as a kid. Yogi almost got named Spritle.

Willy - my first dog, a Brittany. The story behind the name, is more interesting. My Dad, said I could name the dog anything I liked. Being a kid of about 5 years old, the answer was obvious...Mr. Ed. That didn't fly, so my folks suggested I name him after the famous horse's owner, Wilburrrrr...

And then, in what sounds like an old joke, but is definitely true...a childhood friend had a deaf Austrailian Shepherd. It's name - didn't have one. Wouldn't come if you called it anyway, was their excuse.

I had a Black and Tan Coonhound many years ago named Bugler. The last 10 years or so we have been rescuing Bassett Hounds, have had, in order, Spencer, Emma, Lucy, and Beauregard. We now have a rescued German Shepherd named Rio. The thing about rescues is that we like to keep the names they know since it makes for an easier transition. So we haven't named any of them.

Well, to quote a line from the movie "The Jerk": you should name him...

nevermind.

We did have an Old English sheepdog named Woof. When you asked her what her name was, she could tell you. Our daughter was 7 at the time I should probably add (she picked out the name).

Interesting...for the Weims we rescue, we do the opposite, with very few exceptions - every dog gets a new name. The young daughter of one of our volunteers, has been in charge of naming all incoming dogs - she comes up with some doozies. The only dogs that keep their names, are the relatively few that come from loving homes, where giving up the dog was an absolute last resort for the previous owner.

Our reasoning - most dogs coming into rescue, have less than ideal pasts. Many of the dogs for whom we know the previous names, will cower when hearing it. During the rehab period for such dogs, they learn to associate their new name, with only positive reinforcement - assuming the foster/adoptive home has been given decent tips on canine training and behavior.

I always liked the name of the dog in John Waynes "Big Jake" That should keep roger busy.

Susan lab was named Cypress but the kids called him Hyper Cypress which ended up "Cyper" and the name stuck. The new dog was a resuce and came with "Shadow" which fits really well.

I remember when I was a kid (can remember things like that but not where I left the car keys!) that for over a year I thought our dogs' :dog name was "DAMMIT" because that's all my dad ever called him!

My most recent canine acquisition (which some of you folks met last year at the Southeast Gathering in Apalachicola) is a purebred Pit that had a rednosed red for a sire and a bluenosed blue for a mother. He's the purplest dog I've ever seen and aptly carries the moniker, "Haze" ... he even "shakes" left-handed!!!

As some of you may remember, our last dog (a cocker spaniel) was named "Honey". The great thing about her name was that when I was on the dock and called out ...."Honey"....all the cute chicks in their bikinis would turn towards me and smile and wink at me.... :smilep

Defiantly a change of pace thread..

Dog names in chronological order from first to current:

Spike-Black lab
Rivets-little mutt
Aspen-Mixed golden Lab
Molly-Blue Mural
Tatiana- we called Tati-Golden Lab adopted from a couple of guys-need I say more
Jake-Black lab
Rocky- current dog mixed Lab/Husky/Sheppard

Have a Painted turtle named Spike..

When Rock kicks the can we’ll probable go dog-less for a while unless we find one that’s boat worthy.

I'm a dog person - I've been owned by six Golden Retrievers.

It seems every once in a while I get the name correct and, somehow, the name just seems to fit the dog's personality. Kind of dumb luck because who knows what that'll be when its a pup at eight weeks old.

My male, a big hundred pound redhead with a presence where ever he goes is named "Capt'n Foley". In new surroundings he'll take over a room, checking out the crown, much like a uniformed Irish police captain.

The retrievers travel with me pretty much 24/7. I've noticed while many folks seem to forget the female's name (Bridie) far fewer seem to forget "The Capt'n".

Photos of the two are in my album

Ahh yes, those were the good old days, Dave. Now just the Seniors at the various Assisted Living homes you visit consider you a Senior Hottie. Not the same when you get the whistles....

We've been "dog people" for most of our lives. The last three were rescue dogs. Brutus the Bichon, Sammy the "Angel" and now Joey "Da Fonze".

What's best about dogs is that each and every one have very different personalities. We lived at the bottom of a hill in a quiet neighborhood. One dog used to run up the hill, drop his ball and chase it down the hill for exercise.

Brutus once physically threw his water dish at us when we failed to fill it. He was a major "Chick magnet", and would have given Baxter a run for his money in that department. Lucky little shitoski was fondled by a former Miss San Diego and former Miss Missouri in his lifetime. Talk about jealous!!!!

Sammy loved "his" patients and lived to work as Mary's assistant. Hated water in any form beside snow and especially hated the Jenny B. Lucky it doesn't rain here because he'd have burst a bladder rather than go out to do his business in the rain.

Joey is still a happy go lucky little boy in his "terrible two's. He doesn't assist Mary yet but he does sit (sprawl) on an office chair and "Supervise."
Until we owned Joey I had never seen a dog that sat on his butt with legs extended rather than sit on his haunches. I've heard it's a Terrier trait but it's hilarious to see.

We took in a foster dog that the shelter had named Bones. I renamed her Rose on the way home, thinking it sounded similar and could be changed back to Bones when she returned to the shelter. Six years later, Rose is still here.

Once knew a family, last name Silver, whose dog was named Sterling.
