Been There, Now I've Done That

Today, TAX DAY 2009 I transferred the BIG Bucks - not to Uncle Sam to bail out some one, but to buy a C-Dory ! Wish I'd done it last year at this time before the markets started with their exercise but - oh well.

My wife (Jan) and I (Dave, AKA "Toyman") are now the proud owners of a 25. Course now comes the - "what next", the Dory (name TBD) is in Connecticut and we're in S.E. Texas. Our plan at present is to splash the boat in the Connecticut River, go down the Connecticut, west on L.I. Sound, up the Hudson. Spend what ever it takes to do the N.Y. Canals, then bring the boat home (on the trailer) to do the fit out.

The cruise on the CT River, down Long Island Sound, up the Hudson and then the Erie is a great inauguration for your new boat. Congrats and enjoy the cruise!

You, yes you Dave, are the man!! I remember the excitement when we went to pick our boat up, congratulations and happy cruising. Good on ya.

Why, next thing you know, Dave, you and Jan will be doing the Great Loop - the whole enchilada - with us on Daydream! A very important point - C-Dorys MUST be named, it is a terrible insult to have an unnamed C-Dory, a travesty! So give it some thought, and pick a good one, but get 'er a name!

NOW - I know why I retired ! I decided to take a "Quick Trip" to check out MY C-Dory - the very first sight of a 25' for me, and it's ALL mine ( well this is a community property state). Life is GOOD !

I take a early flight out of Houston - 06:15. Now you have to check-in 2 HOURS before flight time = 04:15. I live 1 1/5 hours N. of the airport which now = 02:45. Then add 1/2 hr for parking and transport - holly cow batman we've got to leave NOW to get there yesterday to catch a flight tomorrow ! The few hours on the C-Dory were nice, got LOTS of pictures - and SHE wanted measurements for EVERYTHING - got'em. Go to the airport at 07:30 for an 11:00 flight, turn in car, check-in and wait -reading all the CD & Equipment manuals. Off the blocks on time, zip thru Philly only another 2 hr wait ! Head S. on the home stretch now all is good. Oops, all the Houston airports close - T'storms. So we go to Austin - I wanted to visit Perry (Governor) any way. Not gonna happen, we log 3 hours of ramp time. Finally we head for Houston along with a thousand other flights. To bring this to an end - made it home right around mid-night ! I used to have million mile cards for 3 airlines, and kind of enjoyed flying ! Now I KNOW why I retired !

But the Boat was (is) worth it !

Dave --

Congrats on the new boat. The Connecticut River to NYC is my home stomping grounds. If you want to talk about the area drop me a PM and I would be glad to answer your questions. Not sure where you are starting from or where you are planning on ending up with the boat but if you are going to launch from CT and trailer to TX from NY state, Amtrak is your solution. You could get Brewers Ferry Point Marina to launch you and pay them something to store your rig. From there, you can tour the entire CT River and then head out into the Sound and west. You can pick up Amtrak in Syracuse, Utica and places like that and can undoubtedly find a place to store the boat there while you retrieve your rig. Take a southbound Amtrak to NYC and then a northbound one toward Boston that stops in Old Saybrook. It would be a 5 minute cab ride back to Brewers. On the other hand, if time permits come back to the CT River by boat and don't worry about the train. Nice thing is that you can make the decision up on the Canal and don't have to make the decision before you leave. Holler if I can be of help.
