Bedding down for the night

I have a friend in Redding that makes custom motorcycle seats....he uses different grades of memory foam and uses a carving knife to shape the foam... must be the tool of choice...
I looked on line and I see foam in 4 and 5 pound density.... sure wish I knew how stiff it was.... I know thats the weight of a cubic foot of the stuff...but without any reference point I don't know what that feels like.

We stumbled on www.tuftedtopper.com and thought others might be interested. I just cut and mailed the pattern for it yesterday. We have high hopes for it and will post our opinion after we receive it.

I found the mattress topper when I was searching for bedding options months ago, and my brain has not retained much of the other info I turned up. I do remember that I was focused mostly on a topper and that most sites for toppers or mattresses did not give a price. I was able to infer that it was less than half the price of the mattress offered at one site. The Tufted Topper seemed to be what I was looking for, and I did not pursue quotes from other sources after I found it. By the way, I am not very good with money.

Hi Folks,
I've been in on this a cupla times, 10/26 & 29 at least, here's an update on us.
We bought 3" egg-crate mem. foam initially (abt $65), and tried it at home on our very firm mattress. Tried it with either side up, liked it with the egg crate side up best. We liked it enough that we thought we'd try 3" "flat" mem foam for home, and use, as originally intended, the egg crate on the boat. We got the 3" Serta "good stuff' (High density 4-lb. solid Visco elastic memory foam) thru overstock.com, about $130 for cal-king sized I think, and are very happy with it at home. We tried it with a quilted mattress pad on top of it, didn't like that, so now have a fitted plain sheet over it as a cover.
We have a queen size bed, the cal-king needed to be trimmed in one dim. only, abt 6", did it with electric carving knife. Note that this foam, and the egg-crate, did shrink an inch or 2 in width & length after use.
Haven't yet cut the egg-crate to size for the V-berth, but will soon, and Pat will make up a plain sheet cover for it.

We were wondering if anyone has experience with products purchased from www.tuftedtopper.com? The pictures look great and the product description sounds like a perfect solution the aches and pain we developed last summer cruising around Penobscot Bay and sleeping on the factory cushions. Is the tufted topper really as great as it looks and sounds?
The scenery and the cruising on Penobscot Bay were great. We would like to extend this coming summer's cruise a few days (perhaps to include Acadia National Park) if we can figure out how to get a good night's rest sleeping on the boat.

Like Al and Pat we use an egg-carton foam, cut to the V-berth. We've used it for years and the sleeps on the boat are the best anywhere --
I am bringing this topic back to the forefront to see if anybody had a new take or additional comments on the subject.
We spent our first two night onboard our 23' Venture last week. All went fairly well but my wife Tanya said her back hurt in the morning (very similar to many of the comments earlier on this thread).
Memory foam appears to be the concensus solution. With that in mind, I just wanted to verify a few things...
1. Obviously, all of you place the foam on TOP of the existing C-Dory mattresses, correct?
2. Is the 2-inch foam adequate?
3. I tend to be real hot/warm natured all the time (unlike my wife). Does sleeping on the memory foam tend to make one even hotter?

We have 2" combination memory foam and regular foam on both of or C Dories--on the Tom Cat it is a Queen mattress unit, on the CD 25, I use a twin bed topper, and Marie just uses a very thin foam pad. These are on top of the C Dory mattresses.
I don't personally find any problem with it being "hotter"--but do have a standard mattress pad over the foam, plus the foam's cover (we have similar on our RV and home bed also, so this is something we use almost everywhere).
Each of us is different in what we like for sleeping. I fnd that after sleeping on the C Dory bunk, that my back bothers me less than in my home bed--my wife is just the opposite.

MY wife has some problems with movement and very sensitive skin. The Sunbrella fabric on our V-Berth in the 22 was not comfortable for her. We solved the problem by having the local foam mattress company remake the matress and the filler with part memory foam and some harder foam. The Sunbrella was replaced with a soft velor. It all fit just like the original and is very nice looking. We liked the fact that we did not have several pieces of foam to contend with when making the bed.
We have sold our boat and really miss sleeping on that mattress. Jim Whitney the new owner reports that he sleeps like a baby on the boat.
