Sounds like using the 2# rubber mallet (Patty), worked better than the 10# sledge hammer (Pat) 8)

So true, Bob!

Hi Pat,

I just looked at pacific trailers site and it looks like they have the correct caps.
Here is the link for your size:

Steve

Yes, those Pacific Boat Trailer ones are the ones I bought, and I plan to buy a couple more! They seem to be a bit too big but Patty's finesse managed to seat them OK!

Don't be depressed, you're learning some valuable techniques and trailer maintenance lessons
.
I agree with Patrick on this. Look at all you have learned. Mis-steps are just a part of it. Those caps are meant to go on tightly.

Looks like Patty got the technique down though. Sometimes finesse beats out brute force!

Another way to avoid this is either finding or making a "tool" that fits over the cap and sits on the lip. You hammer on that and not the cap itself. A large socket would work or a piece of pipe the proper diameter. But looks like you just have to let Patty do it....

Pat, you're the only person in the world who can get 7 pages (and counting) of blogs about fixing trailer bearings and brakes. Way to go!!!!

Boris

Pat,

I appreciate your persistence and being like "a dog with bone, who won't give it up." I have learned a lot from this thread through your experience and everyone else's expertise and suggestions.
