Bahamas...

Captd - This is a fantastic read - thanks. Do you mind if I move this to the Grand Adventures forum so it will be easier to spot when the chatter stops?

Oh!! I forgot . Here is a web site that won't be as boring as me.
captd - I disagree. The web site is not near as good as you. Often times I start skimming on long post but I always look forward to yours. Please keep them coming.

Captd,

Yea, Manana would certainly be fun over there (I've always said she's the Perfect "Keys" boat). ...might want to allow a little more than 1:15 on the trip across though!

And, the idea of having more fuel range is a good one. Jut imagine: having Manana to snorkel off-of, and the C-Dory as the "mother" ship! Cool!

Certainly enjoying your trip reports, and think Tyboo's idea of consolidating them into a Grand Adventure is a good idea.

Mike,
I certainly don't mind. I didn't start this thread, but I'm enjoying contributing. Bahamas has been one of my faverite things. It made swimers and divers of my Grandsons.
Looks like I need to proof read my posts a little better. To much sleeping in class 50 years ago. Oh well C- Brats can read between the lines.

Captd,

Great stuff, keep it up!

I haven't been to the Bahamas in years and you're causing my memories of time spent there diving to resurface. Pun intended! I was was an active NAUI instructor for about twenty years and am now in "retired" status. You've got me drooling for some cracked conch and conch serviche!

Thanks for the info on fuel needed.

Best regards,

Nick

Captd and others,

I'm not trying to hijack this thread, but am going to start a new one to see how many Ches. Bay Gathering Brats are interested in a Bahamas cruise in Marcch/April time frame next year.

Maybe we could get something in the planning stages at the Gathering this June.

I have been watching this thread from the sidelines and now I've just got to ask.
Does anyone know if it's cost effective to transport a boat by rail from the west coast to the east coast? I was considering the possability of shipping the boat by rail to Miami. The expense of the round trip for the boat would dictate that I spend an entire season in the islands. Discussion with my boss leads me to believe that a personal leave of absense is possable.
I have looked into leasing a bare boat from either Miami or Grand Bahama but at $5000 a week for a 35 foot, Well ...... you get the idea.
So, back on track. Anyone know what it would cost to ship a boat and trailer by rail across the country? Once it got there, have you got any ideas on how to get it from the point of delivery in Miami and into the water?
Thanks! Roy and Lucky - Water Lillie

Well hi Roy (& Laurie), your FIRST POST! How's your back doing, able to get back into boating now?

As you probably read, I did the trip from Los Angeles to Miami (Key Biscayne actually) in 2000 pulling a 31 ft trimaran. Average mpg was 10, same with my CD25 now. Figure 3,000 miles and 5 days each way. 600 gallons RT, at $3.00 per gallon (may be higher real soon though), that's $1,800 travel + meals (sleep on boat). Possible expenses along the way depending on the condition of your tow vehicle and boat trailer. You can use this to bounce against freight quotes for the boat + your airfare + hotel (waiting for your boat possibly) + taxi/bus expenses.

When I go again, I plan on about 300-400 miles of travelling around by boat, so add another 80-130 gallons for the boat depending on mpg.

You may have already figured all this, just thought I'd say hi.

Regarding sails...Have you looked at a traction kite, like the kite boarders use? I'm doing so, and have a 6 metre that will easily lift me off my feet! Original intent of these things was to power a sailboat. Will keep you posted on results. Big benefit is very small storage space required. Doug

...

Not to be flip, but spending the entire season sounds like a good "cost vs benefit" usage. :wink

Hi: FYI boat transport costs: A friend just got a quote for moving a 25 foot Whaler from Florida to Blaine at $5100 (Canadian).

Hi Steve - The neck has healed up about as good as it's gonna get I guess.
I originaly bought my boat from Three Rivers Marine in Florida and had it shipped to California. The cost was roughly a buck a mile ($2300). These days there's no telling what it would cost. Very preliminary research leads me to think that rail transportation would be closer to $1000 each way but I've only started researching it.

Hi Roy.... I was thinking of trying that Bahama's trip too... I had thought about driving across...and doing my bumbling along type cruising...ya know...Texas fer about a week...the Gulf (Biloxi) for about a week...and so on....no rush ...
But yer idea may be better...as fuel is getting sorta stiff...rail may be an answer...but how do ya get it from da train to da water??? I'm too old to pull much and yer an invalid...Glad to hear yer doing better...

I think Sue wll fly down once we get to the Bahama's and fly home later...she still has a job... ...

Joel.... Ya just buy a second C-Dory... one for the east coast stuff....and one for the west. Or....You could hop on mine and go... Sherryl would go for the fly over too once I get her repowered (the boat I mean)... ...and the 4 of us could snorkle ....and just get some type of cabin for the money we'd save on driving/shipping..
