FWIW, this was released yesterday and this morning.

The Intracoastal Waterway in North Carolina is getting some federal stimulus money for dredging the channel.

The Star-News of Wilmington reported Tuesday that $3 million will go to dredge the waterway from Morehead City to South Carolina line. The waterway is supposed to be at least 12 feet deep, but years of little or no dredging have cut that nearly in half in some areas.

The Army Corps of Engineers also plans to spend nearly $5 million on the three locks and dams on the Cape Fear River and upgrading recreational facilities.

Federal officials have approved $4 million in stimulus funds to dredge part of the Intracoastal Waterway in South Carolina.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that the dredging approved Wednesday will focus on the area from Winyah Bay to Charleston. Some dredging also is planned from Charleston to Port Royal.

The waterway is supposed to be 12 feet deep, the Army Corps of Engineers says it's been only about 6 feet deep in some places. The waterway provides a protected inshore route for coastal boaters and barges.

The money is part of $25 million in projects the corps approved. Some money will be used to dredge lower Charleston Harbor and more will be used near lakes Marion and Moultrie.

Great to hear that some further maintance dredging will occur. There is emergency dredging occuring all of the time, but this is mostly at silted up entrances.

I don't know how much commercial traffic there currently is on the ATL ICW--certainly the yacht traffic is down on both the Gulf Coast ICW--and I was told the ATL ICW. We were at Pickwick Lake this last week, and there is practically zero migration of boats back to the Great lakes this year. (Of course few came down last fall).
