Another wireless broadband card question...

I am updating my Mac laptop (well, the Powerbook started giving me problems while cruising the PNW). Of couse, in the interest of "improved" technology, Apple, Sony, Dell, and a few others have abandoned the PCMCIA slots in their laptops for the new, improved, and nothing-fits-it Expresscard/34 slot. I bought a V640 card for wireless broadband for the new Mac. I'm thinking of using the old Powerbook as my backup-leave-on-the-boat computer (now that I have it working decent again). So, since I won't be using both wireless cards at the same time, is there any way to have them both active on one number?

Not C-Dory specific, but we do use the computer onboard, including posting images here and getting my daily C-Brats update! :wink

Best wishes,

Jim - I don't believe you can use two cards with the same number. The number is linked with the chip in the card and you can't have one number linked to two different chips.

IF the cards are with a service provider that uses a GSM network, the number is connected to the SIM card. Hence, it MAY be possible to use to cards with the same number by swapping the sim card between them. However, you'll have to check with the service provider to see if this is possible.

Thanks for the replies. There was a time when I had two cell phones with the same number. Obviously, you couldn't use both at the same time, but it let me have a phone in the car and one that I could carry around. This has been quite a few years ago. I'm not trying to keep Verizon from getting their due (heck, I'm paying for three numbers as it is)... just thought that I could still get some usage out of the older Powerbook and not have to tote a computer back and forth. Never as easy as it could be, huh?

Best wishes,

Jim - look at the SIM card and if they are the same in both the PCMCIA and V640 card then just switch the SIM card to the computer you want to use. To get the SIM card out there is a small locking tab on one end of the card. A paper clip works to unlock it.
