Another way to rig Bumpers

I was in a transcient slip in Tuckerton New Jersey Saturday. I noticed a boat next to me had used his rod holders in his gunnels to use a heavy wood dowl with a fender whip attached to free up his cleats from having to have both a fender and dock lines. Pictures in my album page five the last two pictures. Maybe someone with more pic knowledge can put them with this thread. Anyway we hang fenders from roof rails side cleats but in the aft area things get busy on the rear cleat. If you have rod holders aft this is an easy solution. This idea caught my eye as being pretty slick and a simple solution of having dock lines and bumpers on the same cleat. First time I'd ever seen it. :smiled

I have rigged up my boat with the same setup since my first cd-22 I use two one for each side I have 4 rod holders in the cockpit of my CC-23.I have tried to find the plastic dowels with no success to fix up for a friends boat but no luck . If anyone knows where one can get those 1 1/2 in plastic dowels plz let us know

Jim,
How about using a piece of 1 inch schedule 80 PVC pipe. The OD would be 1-3/8" and would be double wall for extra strength.

Maybe find a smaller piece of PVC tube and sleeve the larger piece making it double wall PVC tubing, or pot the inside with resin or epoxy. Maybe aluminum pipe would be another route, stainless $$$$

I made those fenders back in 2005 for my cd -22 check out Jennykatz (duck) photos 24and 39 I used closet poles from Home depot they worked perfectly . I've checked Lowes and Ace to no avail . I could use a closet wood pole and stain or paint it . It's for a friends boat so I wanted the white plastic . Anyway Thanks for the replies .

Yep--I used that trick with PVC pipe or closet rod dowels for many years--when it is at the best place for the fender. First boat I used that in was acquired in 1969.
