Dan tells me that he'd like to have about 40 strips before shopping it around. When we were visiting them recently, I got to see the process... it is a LOT of work. He starts with a large panel, sketching. Then starts inking. Hand letters. Then scans it and uses Photoshop for final workup. Somewhere along the way, he will start working up color strips for Sunday papers.
And in the middle of all this, he is doing free lance graphic artist work... oh, and his "day job" is teaching. He also coaches every season. He's a busy boy.
While we all know this character is fictional, it is fun to see how Dan works in some "real" experiences. He lurks here once in a while to see what the reaction is... occasionally tells me of his ideas for upcoming strips. He is building the background to get Jim and Joan on the boat. I'm anxious to see where this goes.
Hope everyone is enjoying the strips. Give him some encouragement - it's all he's getting from this right now.
Well, everyone who has ever thought about retiring, retired, married a blond, and/or has a cat can identify. Then there's the boat and the short pants people. Count me in that group, except, of course, for the short pants. :|
From my very early youth through my twenties I seldom missed the Sunday Funnies or daily cartoon strips in the San Fransisco Chronicle. Those were the days when the print media still ruled. In my opinion Dan's concept and implantation is equal to or better then most of what kept me coming back for more during that time and its fun and enjoyable to have that experience again here, especially with the characters based on ones we have had the privilege to follow along with in their real life adventures.
If Dan doesn't break into the big time it could be due more to the ever down spiraling of the print media today and the inherent difficulties of entering big time entertainment not due to lack of talent and his endeavor to use it in this way.
Whatever the future holds for Dan and his series I'm glad He is sharing it here with us first.
I didn't get to see Warren's post, but he did send me a PM. Dan and I discussed the scope of the strip before he started on it. Our thought is that it is more about the millions of baby boomers who are looking down the barrel of retirement. Some will make that move early (like Captain Jim) and others will dream about it. While boating is certainly a central theme, it is more about finding one's way through the adventures of early retirement and seeking new adventures.
We have shown the strips to non-boating folks, and they are able to identify with the Captain Jim character... and all the "stuff" that he will deal with. When we (the real Jim and Joan) visit with non-boating folks about our travels and adventures, there is always that "oh, that sounds like fun" response. Who knows - maybe this will bring more "dreamers" to boating? After all, if Captain Jim can do it, the rest of us normal folks (who aren't always close friends with Murphy) should be able to live our dreams.
