Caryn and I are having a great time in Maui. Thanks to the wonderful rental condo owned by David and Kate of Anna Leigh, we've finally escaped cold dreary Seattle and I'm currently writing this email from the beach.

If you have the chance, contact David. Their condo is right across the beach with great views from the living room. The place is spotless with all the amenities plus it's located on the sunny dry side of Maui in Kihei

Thanks again David and Kate. Life is good!

Maui is a spectacular place. (Especially if you are normally in a sun-deprived area 8) ). If you haven't been there before, a few suggestions...

Old Lahaina Luau... a good meal with entertainment, more "Hawaiian" than the resort luaus.

Take a day trip to Lanai; Trilogy does a great job, with snorkeling, some time on Lanai, and good sailing.

Cheese Burger in Paradise. Not the "upscale" one in Wailea, but the old one on the waterfront in Lahaina. The food is OK, but the view, especially first thing in the morning or at sunset is worth the trip. Try to get a table by the waterside windows.

Friday Night Art-Walk in Lahaina. The art galleries along Front Street in Lahaina have an "open house" of sorts on Fridays, with wine and conversation.

Leilani's On The Beach, nice dining with great atmosphere in Whaler's Village (Ka'anapali Beach).

The bike ride down the volcano sounds touristy, but the sunrise trip is quite a treat.

Drive south from where you are to Big Beach (Makena Beach). Try to look "local" so you fit in. If you want to tan parts that haven't seen the sun, slip on over to Little Beach.

Rent a Hobie or learn to surf.

We used to go to Hawaii, usually Maui, as an annual winter treat when we lived in the frozen northland. These days, we look for "cool" places to go when the weather turns hot in the Tropical Tip.

Have fun - post some photos!

Aloha,
Jim

Jim,

The PNW is cool......today at least. And Seven Sacred Pools and the road on past is HOT. IF you like to get away from the crowd.

Peter and Caryn, enjoy the warm.

Pete and Caryn,
We're so happy that you are are having a fun Maui holiday !! We can't resist piling on with our recommendations too. A drive to Upcountry and wandering around is a neat experience amid the locals. A meal at Haliimaile General Store in Makawao while you are up there is not to be missed. Very special food, and lunch is easier on the budget than dinner. We'd feel way cheated if we were on Maui and didn't go there at least once !!
Another great side trip is a drive to Hana. And we agree with Jim about Cheeseburgers in Paradise -- upstairs, waterside window (no glass) table and hope for a rain storm !!! Like Jim said food is passable but the atmosphere --- it's everything !!
Aloha,
Bob and Betsy

its raining here in everett. Hope you are having a good time. You should go snorkeling at Honokeana bay. West side of the island off of Honapiilani road. park on the road and walk between the condos, its a public right of way. In our 8 days of diving around the island there was not one type of wild life that we say that was not also in the this cove. Eel's of every type, 10 turtles, trumpet fish, everything was there in a nice protected cove. If we go again we are just going to dive this cove for the whole week. forget the dive boats. This is better.

If you spend a day in Lahaina, go to the Take Home Maui store - the proprietor, Lee Munimitsu, is my college roommate from Western in 1964-1965. At least he was the proprietor 21 years ago, but I'll bet he still is...

You two are going to have to extend your stay for several weeks to get all this done. And when your through with the list you will need to come home to rest up from your vacation.

Thanks for all the suggestions, David's right, I need about two more weeks here. Since it was your idea David, what say a complimentary week to extend the trip? :wink

Just kidding. We went on a snorkeling excursion on a big catamaran tour boat today. It was lots of fun. Although the tradewinds weren't too bad today, they usually kick in around 11:30 every mrning. We've learned to swim early if we want to take advantage of sunny, calm conditions. By noon, the water gets pretty choppy with whitecaps around 2 feet but Monday was pretty bad with 3-4 footers all afternoon.

We survived the drive to Hana on Sunday. This is a 45 mile drive that can take 3 hours due to driving an extremely narrow road through a mountainous rain forest with 59 one way bridges. It was quite a trip. We enjoyed Lahaina yesterday and are planning to watch the sunrise on Haleakula volcano above the clouds. Lots to do, not enough time. I'll try to get one pics laded.

Next weekend, shrimping. I'm already getting tired thinking about it.

Peter, take some blankets, coats or both for that "the sunrise on Haleakula volcano above the clouds". it gets COLD up there. Or hope your rental car has a heater in it. I remember frost on the ground in shorts and a T-shirt. I laid on the car hood to gather engine warmth. No heater in the rental car back then. Took that sun for ever to come up.  :tux
