AIS app...

Jim,

Looks like it simply transmits your GPS position via phone/internet to one or more of the AIS reporting stations. You will NOT show up on AIS receivers on other vessels

Description
See and be seen on your boat in Coastal waters via AIS with 60 mile Collision detection using just your iPhone.

Let's you keep a watch on boats near you and others keep a watch on you using Boat Beacon and Global AIS systems like AIS Hub, Marine Traffic and Shipfinder. Does not require any external AIS transponder equipment.

Ideal for busy and popular coastal areas, harbours and ports upto 15 miles out to sea.

Designed by a Skipper for Skippers it can also be used on land so your friends and family can keep a weather eye on you.

"Boat Beacon requires internet access to work. Most popular coastal areas in the US have cellular data access extending 12 or more miles out to sea. The UK has nearly complete coastal coverage out to 12 miles. AIS Ship data is provided by a network of voluntary AIS shore based stations. Some areas may not have AIS coverage.

N.B. This is not an AIS transponder. You will not be visible to other ships on their AIS systems unless they also use data from the same land based AIS networks."

Apart from that it seems to have some interesting features.

It's getting to the point where you could spend all the time on a boat looking at "apps" Not my definition of "Appy Hour" :-)

Merv

Appy Hour? Only if you're in England... pip, pip, cheerio! 8)

Actually I picked up the phrase in the last few days by visiting a number of food and drink establishments in the land of Maple Syrup and "Loonies". Seems that "Appies" are now what you eat before your main course not what you download to your smart phone while you are walking down the street avoiding bears :-)

If we all had it it would be easer to find each other. I might get it if it comes to android and share with my fishing buddies so we can find each other.

Tom, there is an ap for knowing where your buddies phones are. :phone

Merv, Careful you don't get an "N" in front of those "appys" you are eating.

There is an app for a Droid that allows you to see where your buddies are. One of the kids installed whilst I wasn't looking. It's called "Latitude" and you can see the location of anyone who has agreed to check in with you. No, I don't know anything else, but I do Dorth is home in Redondo Beach.

Boris

P.S. I also assume it's free, since her husband installed it.

"Fishing Buddy" is an oxymoron unless he/she is in the same boat :-)

Latitude came installed on my phone. It may be the one that the Veerizon person was talking about that you could see where the person was calling you from. OR teach them to get and install MMSI and use the DSC locate feature.

Funny thing about fishermen: Truth grows every time the story is told.
