Air conditioner install location etc

It's so hot in Virginia that I haven't been using the boat. It happens every summer. I need an air conditioner. What I don't need is a hot water heater (have never used it) or a refrigerator (too noisy and doesn't work as well as a cooler). Has anyone ever switched out one of these items for an air conditioner. I know it could be installed on top, but more weight on the boat, esp up top is something I'd prefer to avoid.

Was working with someone yesterday who said it was cooler in his home country -- of Nigeria. :shock: So I either need to go to Nigeria to cool off or get an air conditioner. :beer :smiled :beer
 
I'm in the DC area too -- it's been cooler all summer at my former home in Georgia!

My 25 has a Cruiseair a/c unit installed in the cabinet underneath the passenger seat. It doesn't fill the space.
 
Well that's three to the good!

1) I like the Cruiseair
2) Your photos of generator setup are excellent
3) I only have to go as far as Georgia to cool off

I'll look for you on the water I'm down your way regularly.

We live in naples fl and we use a frigeadere A/C unit in the front window only when we are boat camping or at a marina with elec .We usually use our boat for daily boating very few overnights . You might want to look at a low profile roof air they are about 4-5 in. above the roof . Reasons for roof air over water cooled air
1-Boat camping r/v style
2-might be easier install
3-cheaper to buy
4-tried and it works
5-no clogged water lines with barnacles etc.
6-On the cd 25 it looks like it belongs
 
Jemmykatz has given the good reasons we have avoided the water cooled built in air conditioner type of units. I might add that we have used ours on the lift or trailer just as a dehumidifier to prevent mold etc also. We used a RV Coleman Polar Cub on the Tom Cat. On the 22's and the 25 we have used a 5000 BTU "Arctic King" ($99 at WalMart) when at anchor. This unit runs well on a Honda EU 2000.

There is a recent thread of running several of the marine built in units on a Honda EU 2000.

You will find that the boat is cool enough when running with windows open and wind shield open, but for sleeping you will want the AC.

One other issue with many areas, including the Chesapeake is the jelly fish--they will plug up AC strainers very quickly. We found that to be a major issue several summers in that area.
 
We have just came back from the James River Cruise, Very hot in the Afternoons & night. Two of the C-Dorys had the front Window Units They worked great for them, We have a Roof Air I could not tell any difference in the inside of theirs over ours (both very cool), the front unit was very Cool & efficient at less $$$ Jim
 
We bought our boat in 2009 and had Wefings install a roof mount unit. I did not want to have a roof mounted unit. It was not a look I wanted. But after thinking over all the pros and cons we went with a roof top unit. I think it is 9000 btu my Honda EU 2000 can run it while at anchor or boon dock boat camping. We never run the unit on set on high as even set to low with the temp set a little above half way it gets like a meat locker. We do use it in campgrounds when we are traveling on land. It was the best boat accessory we ever bought. It required a 14" square cut out in the roof. For us it's one less thing you don't have to lug around or store up in the berth area when cruising. Getting either shore power hooked up or the getting the generator fired up is much easier for me and the little woman than lugging around a window unit. Just throw a breaker and turn the sucker on. Our roof deals with the condensation run off quite well. We have been in some seas that I would rather not be in ever again and never went belly up because of the weight up top. Just my opinion. But we use our boat a decent amount.
