After Market Swim Platform?

I thought I saw some discussion regarding swim platforms, but now cant find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Marty, those are both the same. :)

Just as an FYI: Much of the problem on my 27's transom is due to the Swim Platform bolts and outdrive bolts not being sealed correctly. Make sure if you install one to drill a larger hole than needed and fill it back up with epoxy. Then once the epoxy has dried, redrill the hole to the correct size and follow Bob's (Thataway) advice on sealing up the bolts. Sure would have saved me a lot of headache if that had been done on my Transom!

I put on one of the after market swim platforms. There are SS molly bolts. If you over drill the hole, then under cut and epoxy line the hole, and make sure you have a good seal with 4200 or 5200, this will work fine. I like an oversized washer on the outside to give a better sealing surface. If you can get to the inside of the transom, then it would be easier.

Thanks for the info. Im having trouble visualizing how a swim platform would work on my 19 footer. It seems you would have to step up and into the transom and then step down to the platform. That doesnt seem convenient or safe. I can just see all sorts of slips and falls. I current just hang a ladder over the starboard side.

You just step into the splash well. I assume that almost everyone has non skid strips in both the splash well and on the transom cap for safety? If not, its a very good idea. We let our dogs walk the plank (doggy ladder= "pet step" to the beach from the swim platform.

ehh...I dont have these, but I will look into this. :embarrased . Any links to an after market supplier?

Just to add to this a bit.

If you crawl though and/or over the splash well on the way to the swim step, you may also want to ad a strategically placed handle or two to assist you on your way. They can be on the transom or in the splash well itself, of course.

Exactly where you put them will depend on what other equipment you have back there and your own particular needs and those of your 1st mate and typical guests.

Keep in mind that if you've fallen overboard in cold water, you may be pretty weak, etc.

I prefer ones that give a good grip because of their textured surface, large diameter, and/or squarish shape as opposed to real slick, polished stainless steel of small diameter and rounded shape.

On the C Dory 25 we had two "handles"--one was the built in railing, the other was one of the removable cross bars, which we used for ice chests or the generator across the splash well. We often boarded the boat from the ground using the swim step ladder. The Tom Cat has both the railings, plus large hand rails on each side of the dive ladder. You can also grab the engine cowling--some have a "grip" in the front.
